Denison 61, Ohio Wesleyan 41

Feb. 8, 2008

[ Kayla Gordon ]Freshman post Kayla Gordon (St. Louis, Mo./Mehlville) scored to give the Bishops a 2-0 lead, but Denison reeled off the next 13 points and went on to a North Coast Athletic Conference win over Ohio Wesleyan on Friday in Granville.

Gordon's lay-in put the Bishops on the scoreboard just over a minute into the game, but Ohio Wesleyan would not score again for more than 7 minutes, when freshman wing Tyler Cordell (Columbus/St. Francis DeSales) canned a lay-in.

Meanwhile, the Big Red collected a 3-point play and a jumper by Katie St. Clair, a pair of buckets by Haley Dahlgard, and inside baskets from Ellen O'Brien and Carolyn Simpson to take a 13-2 lead with 12:25 left in the first half.

After the teams traded baskets, freshman guard Pam Quigney (Mentor) hit a 3-pointer, then stole the ball and converted a 3-point play off the fast break to bring Ohio Wesleyan within 15-10 at the midway point of the first half.

The Bishops were still within 24-16 after a pair of Quigney free throws with 3:18 left in the period, but the Big Red got hoops from Simpson and Sarah Perrine, sandwiched around a free throw by senior wing Steffi Graf, to increase the lead to 28-17 at the intermission.

Denison opened the second half with a St. Clair 3-pointer, and Ohio Wesleyan would not come closer than a dozen points throughout the remainder of the contest.

Quigney led the Bishops with 12 points, and senior post Kelli Lester (Pataskala/Watkins Memorial) grabbed a team-high 7 rebounds.

St. Clair led the Big Red with 17 points, Perrine and Dahlgard added 11 apiece, and Simpson finished with 10 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Ellen O'Brien led Denison with 8 assists.
