Case Reserve 74, Ohio Wesleyan 61

Dec. 1, 2007

Freshman wing Tyler Cordell (Columbus/St. Francis DeSales) hit a lay-in to give the Bishops a 21-20 lead, but Case Reserve responded with a 14-0 run to take the lead for good, then held off an Ohio Wesleyan second-half rally to record a non-conference win over the Bishops on Saturday in Cleveland.

The Spartans built a pair of 5-point leads in the early going, and still led, 16-12, on Beth Andrasik's lay-in with 11:49 left in the first half.

Ohio Wesleyan rallied with a 3-pointer by freshman guard Pam Quigney (Mentor) and a lay-in by freshman post Kayla Gordon (St. Louis, Mo./Mehlville) to take a 17-16 lead, and the Bishops answered a pair of Case baskets with a pair of free throws by junior post Katie Hamilton (Hilliard/Darby) and Cordell's basket for a 21-20 lead with 8:10 left the first half.

Mary Herendeen put the Spartans ahead to stay with a 3-pointer, and after a 3-point play by Ashley Horton, 3 straight baskets by Ashleigh Tondo off Spartan steals, and a Colleen Martin lay-in off a Tondo assist, Case Reserve held a 34-21 lead with 5:51 left in the half. The Spartans would lead by as many as 17 points before Quigney buried a 3-pointer to make it 42-28 at halftime.

Ohio Wesleyan opened the second half with a 3-pointer by senior wing Steffi Graf (Poland/Seminary) and another Quigney basket to close within 42-33 early in the half.

With the Bishops trailing, 45-35, the Ohio Wesleyan defense clamped down, holding the Spartans to one basket during the next 6-plus minutes. Meanwhile, Graf and Cordell sank lay-ins, junior post Laurel Lawson (Navarre/Fairless) added a bucket, Quigney hit a free throw and Gordon drilled a 3-pointer to bring Ohio Wesleyan within 48-45 with 11:10 left in regulation time.

The Bishops were still within 3 points after Lawson hit a 3-pointer with 9:18 left to play, but the Spartans scored the next 7 points on a Herendeen 3-pointer, a pair of Horton free throws, and a Tondo jumper to stretch the lead back into double figures.

Graf followed with a pair of free throws to bring the Bishops within 60-52 with 5:53 left, but that was as close as Ohio Wesleyan would come.

Quigney led the Bishops with 14 points, while Lawson finished with 11 points and Gordon added 10 points. Each of the 3 snared 4 rebounds to share the Bishop lead, and Quigney led the Bishops with 4 assists.

Tondo and Horton scored 20 points apiece for the Spartans, with Herendeen adding 16 points. Horton led Case Reserve with 9 rebounds and Tondo had a game-high 9 assists.
