![]() Ohio Wesleyan 17, St. Vincent 14 April 27, 2008 Deaton had given the Bishops a 2-1 lead by converting a free-position shot less than 3 minutes into the game, but the Bearcats responded with a 4-0 run that included 2 goals by Sarah Peranteau and 2 goals by Cassie Alberding. The Bishops bounced back with scores by Mudge, sophomore attacker Jessica Copeland (Ligonier, Pa./Foxcroft (Va.)), senior midfielder Kadi Kuhlenberg (Cincinnati/Anderson) and senior attacker Polly Burke (Milton, Mass.) to take a 6-5 lead, and after St. Vincent tied the game at 6-6 on a score by Alberding, Ohio Wesleyan reeled off 4 straight goals, with Mudge contributing a goal and an assist during that stretch, to take a 10-6 advantage. Mudge, Deaton and senior attacker Julia Fouts (Cleveland Heights/Hathaway Brown) had consecutive goals during the second half that built Ohio Wesleyan's lead to 14-9 with 20:06 left in regulation time, but St. Vincent went on a 4-1 run to close within 16-14 on a score by Lauren Eller with 3:48 to play. The game's pivotal play came shortly thereafter when St. Vincent's Lauren Martino was awarded a free position shot and a chance to pare the deficit to a single goal, but Ohio Wesleyan goalkeeper Maggie Eichenlaub (Crystal, Minn./Robbinsdale Cooper) made a timely save, and the Bishops would ice the game on Deaton's goal with 1:43 remaining. Deaton and Kuhlenberg each finished with 4 goals and an assist for Ohio Wesleyan, while Mudge added 3 goals and an assist. Eichenlaub had 7 saves for the Bishops. Eller led the Bearcats with 4 goals and 4 assists, and Peranteau finished with 4 goals. Erica Lisi had 4 saves for St. Vincent. |
