![]() Ohio Wesleyan 4, Washington & Jefferson 0 Oct. 11, 2007 The teams battled through a scoreless first half that was played predominantly in the midfield. Ohio Wesleyan had 2 good scoring chances, both on runs by senior forward Meredith Gerrick (Durham, N.C./Indianapolis (Ind.) North Central). Gerrick's first chance, a run up the right side, came in the eighth minute and resulted in the first shot of the game, which President goalkeeper Jackie Foltz saved. Gerrick's second chance, a run up the left side in the 20th minute, saw Foltz come out and stop Gerrick's first shot, then move back to her left to break up a potential Gerrick follow shot toward the right side. Foltz stopped 2 more Bishop shots during the half, one by junior forward Allie Cozzone (Chagrin Falls/Kenston) and another by Gerrick off a corner in the 28th minute. Washington & Jefferson's best chance to score came in the 23rd minute, when Beth Reefer lofted a shot from about 30 yards which landed on top of the Ohio Wesleyan goal. Thwarted by an eye-opening 10 offside calls during the first half, the Bishops changed tactics during the second half and worked more from the outside in. The strategy nearly paid off in the 50th minute when Gerrick took a centering pass and sent it toward the left post, and Corbett's redirect at the goal mouth was just wide. Just over a minute later, Cozzone sent a crossing pass to sophomore forward Caitlin Logan (Findlay), but Logan's shot was wide right. Cozzone and Corbett connected in the 64th minute, with Cozzone sending a crossing pass in from the right side to Corbett, who finished the chance on the left side to break the scoreless tie. Corbett sent a similar crossing pass into the box from the right side in the 72nd minute, with sophomore forward Meghan Cahoon (Montpelier, Vt.) there at the left side for the finish and a 2-0 Bishop lead. The Bishops made it 3-0 in the closing minutes when Logan made a run toward the President goal. Foltz came out to break up the play and the ball caromed to the right, where freshman forward Hannah Sterling (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) had a look at a wide-open net and converted for her first collegiate goal. Logan wrapped up the evening's scoring in the 89th minute, winning the ball and making a run up the left side and hitting a shot into the back of the net for the 4-0 final. |
