3rd of 7 at Kenyon Kickoff

[ Casey Ridgeway ]Sophomore Casey Ridgeway (Fredericktown), freshman Rachael Newman (Strongsville) and sophomore Claire Everhart (Edinboro, Pa./General McLane) won events to lead Ohio Wesleyan at the Kenyon Kickoff on Saturday in Gambier.

Otterbein won the meet with 169 points to 147 for second-place Capital and 139 for the third-place Bishops. Washington & Jefferson finished fourth with 67 points, followed by John Carroll (59), Kenyon (23) and Denison (17).

Ridgeway won the 55-meter dash in :07.61 and added a third-place finish in the 200-meter dash. Newman won the 800-meter run in 2:21.42, and Everhart won the 3000-meter run in 10:56.38.

The 1600-meter relay team of freshman Lainey Kekic (Canfield/Western Reserve), sophomore Sarah Shinn (Edinboro, Pa./General McLane), sophomore Kara Reiter (Chardon) and senior Ashley Shaffer (Lancaster) claimed Ohio Wesleyan's other first-place finish, winning in a time of 4:12.91.

Other standouts for the Bishops included Reiter, who finished second in the 800-meter run; freshman Kat Zimmerly (Edinboro, Pa./General McLane), who was second in the 3000-meter run; Shaffer, who recorded third-place finishes in the 400-meter dash and the high jump and a fourth in the triple jump; junior Jessica Merrill (Columbia Station/Columbia), who was third in the triple jump and fifth in the high jump; junior Leah Schmelzer (Marion/Pleasant), who finished fourth in the mile run and fifth in the 3000-meter run; sophomore Santa Zalite (Winston-Salem, N.C./Reynolds), who placed fourth in the 800-meter run; and Shinn, who finished fifth in the 800-meter run.

The Bishop 800-meter relay team of Ridgeway, Merrill, Kekic and sophomore Ashlie Britton (LeRoy/Painesville Riverside) finished third.
