3rd of 6 at Greater Columbus Invitational

[ Ashley Shaffer ]Senior Ashley Shaffer (Lancaster) posted a first- and a second-place finish and helped a relay team to a runner-up finish to lead Ohio Wesleyan at the Greater Columbus Invitational, hosted by Otterbein College on Saturday in Westerville.

Otterbein won the meet with 147 1/2 points to 132 1/2 for second-place Capital. Ohio Wesleyan finished third with 128 points, followed by Muskingum (49), Denison (26) and Kenyon (11).

Shaffer won the 200-meter dash in a time of :28.24 and finished second in the high jump. She also combined with freshman Lainey Kekic (Canfield/Western Reserve), sophomore Casey Ridgeway (Fredericktown), and sophomore Ashlie Britton (LeRoy/Painesville Riverside) to finish second in the 800-meter relay.

Also winning events for Ohio Wesleyan were sophomore Claire Everhart (Edinboro, Pa./General McLane), who won the mile run in 5:18.39 and finished fourth in the 3000-meter run; junior Leah Schmelzer (Marion/Pleasant), who won the 3000-meter run in 11:00.22; and sophomore Sharon Rymut (Broadview Heights/Brecksville-Broadview Heights), who won the weight throw with an effort of 40-9 1/2.

Other standouts for the Bishops included junior Jessica Merrill (Columbia Station/Columbia), who placed second in the long jump and fifth in the triple jump; freshman Rachael Newman (Strongsville), who finished second in the 800-meter run; sophomore Sarah Shinn (Edinboro, Pa./General McLane), who finished third in the 800-meter run; junior Laura Binkley (Columbus/Bishop Watterson), who finished third in the 3000-meter run; Britton, who placed fourth in the 55-meter hurdles; freshman Kat Zimmerly (Edinboro, Pa./General McLane), who was fourth in the mile run; Kekic, who finished fifth in the high jump and sixth in the 400-meter dash; Ridgeway, who was fifth in the 400-meter dash; sophomore Hannah Winant (Gaithersburg, Md.), who placed fifth in the 800-meter run; junior Valerie Sloboda (Columbia, Md./Atholton), who finished sixth in the mile run; sophomore Santa Zalite (Winston-Salem, N.C./Reynolds), who placed sixth in the 800-meter run; sophomore Emily Washek (Erie, Pa./McDowell), who was sixth in the pole vault; freshman Jesi Dackin (Reynoldsburg), who was sixth in the 3000-meter run.

The Bishop 1600-meter relay team of Ridgeway, Newman, Shinn and sophomore Kara Reiter (Chardon) finished third.
