at NCAC championship

[ Ashley Shaffer ]Senior Ashley Shaffer (Lancaster) won All-North Coast Athletic Conference honors and set a school record to lead the Bishops at the first day of the North Coast Athletic Conference championship meet, hosted by Denison University on Friday in Granville.

With 4 events completed, Allegheny was leading the meet with 42 points to 40 for Oberlin and 23 for Ohio Wesleyan. Wittenberg was in fourth place with 16 1/2 points, followed by Wooster (15), Denison (9 1/2), Kenyon (6), Earlham (4), and Hiram (0).
Friday's results

Shaffer finished second in the triple jump, with her effort of 35-5 3/4 breaking her own school record of 35-3 set in 2007.

Other standouts for the Bishops included junior Jessica Merrill (Columbia Station/Columbia), who placed fourth in the triple jump; junior Laura Binkley (Columbus/Bishop Watterson), who finished fifth in the 5000-meter run; sophomore Sharon Rymut (Broadview Heights/Brecksville-Broadview Heights), who was sixth in the shot put; sophomore Amy Herrington (Vermilion), who finished seventh in the shot put; and junior Leah Schmelzer (Marion/Pleasant), who was eighth in the 5000-meter run.

In preliminary action, freshman Lainey Kekic (Canfield/Western Reserve) turned in the meet's best time in the 200-meter dash, clocking a :26.82, and was second-best in the 400-meter dash, while sophomore Casey Ridgeway (Fredericktown) had the meet's best time in the 55-meter dash at :07.43.

The NCAC championship meet concludes on Saturday.
