at NCAC heptathlon

[ Jessica Merrill ]Junior Jessica Merrill (Columbia Station/Columbia) and senior Ashley Shaffer (Lancaster) were in third and fourth place respectively after the first day of the North Coast Athletic Conference heptathlon competition on Saturday in Oberlin.

Allegheny's Emily Pfeufer was leading the event with 2512 points to 2488 for Oberlin's Madeline Schultz. Merrill was a close third with 2458 points, with Shaffer right behind at 2440 points.

Merrill clocked a :16.02 in the 100-meter hurdles, the fastest individual time in the event. She cleared 4-11 1/2 in the high jump, turned in a 29-8 1/4 in the shot put and finished the 200-meter dash in :27.79.

Shaffer, the defending NCAC champion in the heptathlon, finished the 100-meter hurdles in :17.07, shared the best high jump of the event by clearing 5-1 3/4, had a 27-6 in the shot put and had the day's best time in the 200-meter dash with a :26.83.

The heptathlon competition concludes on Sunday with the long jump, javelin and 800-meter run.
