at NCAC heptathlon

[ Ashley Shaffer ]Senior Ashley Shaffer (Lancaster) won All-North Coast Athletic Conference honors and qualified for the NCAA Division III championship meet in the heptathlon during the NCAC multi-event competition on Saturday and Sunday in Oberlin.

Shaffer compiled 4161 points in the heptathlon, finishing behind Allegheny's Emily Pfeufer's total of 4388. Her point total surpassed the provisional qualifying standard for the NCAA Division III championship meet to be held May 22-24 at the University of Wisconsin at Oshkosh.

Junior Jessica Merrill (Columbia Station/Columbia) finished fourth with 3951 points.

Shaffer had the best efforts of the meet in the 200-meter dash (:26.83) and shared the best high jump of the event by clearing 5-1 3/4. She finished the 100-meter hurdles in :17.07, threw the shot 27-6, had a leap of 15-4 in the long jump, threw the javelin 95-3 and clocked a 2:22.40 in the 800-meter run.

Merrill clocked a :16.02 in the 100-meter hurdles, sharing the event's fastest individual time. She cleared 4-11 1/2 in the high jump, threw the shot 29-8 1/4, finished the 200-meter dash in :27.79, went 15-6 3/4 in the long jump, threw the javelin 85-5, and finished the 800-meter run in 2:37.58.
