Ohio Wesleyan 6, Mount St. Joseph 1

March 7, 2009

Freshman first baseman Tim Knezovich (Columbus/Briggs) delivered a 2-run single during a 3-run first inning that started Ohio Wesleyan on its way to a non-conference win over Mount St. Joseph on Saturday in Port Charlotte, Fla.

Freshman second baseman James DiBiasio (Westlake) opened the Bishop first by reaching on an error by Lion second baseman Drew Williams. Sophomore outfielder Zach Frentsos (Delaware/Hayes) followed with an infield single, and a walk to senior shortstop Logan Hronis (Rocky River/St. Edward) loaded the bases with nobody out.

MSJ starter Ben Hunterman came back to strike out senior designated hitter Greg Vasami (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Rye Neck) and junior catcher Steve Ruygrok (Centennial, Colo./Cherry Creek), but Knezovich followed with a single to right that scored DiBiasio and Frentsos, with Hronis coming around to score on Lion rightfielder Nick Weimer's throwing error on the play.

The Bishops added 2 more runs in the fourth when Knezovich singled and stole second to open the inning. After senior third baseman Eric McComas (Beverly Hills, Mich./Birmingham Groves) struck out, sophomore outfielder Eric Livingston (Delaware/Hayes) singled in Knezovich and took second on the throw to the plate. Senior outfielder Matt Rhode tripled in Livingston for a 5-0 Bishop lead.

Mount St. Joseph got on the scoreboard in the sixth, assembling a single by Ryan Rodriguez, a walk to Chris Hall, and a single by Jake Daugherty.

DiBiasio, Knezovich and Rhode each had 2 hits for Ohio Wesleyan, with Knezovich driving in 2 runs.

Junior righthander Matthew Struble (Defiance/Edon) started for Ohio Wesleyan and pitched 4.1 scoreless innings, striking out 3 and walking 2. Freshman righthander Andrew Cox (Ashville/Teays Valley) worked out of a fifth-inning jam and was credited with the win, and freshman lefthander Mitchell Monke (Springfield/North) pitched the final 2.0 innings.

Hunterman was charged with the loss for Mount St. Joseph.
