March 8, 2009

[ Eric McComas ]Senior third baseman Eric McComas (Beverly Hills, Mich./Birmingham Groves) and freshman catcher Tyler Hall (Caledonia/River Valley) each delivered 2-run hits to highlight an 8-run fourth inning that lifted Ohio Wesleyan to a win over Benedictine in the nightcap of a non-conference doubleheader on Sunday in Port Charlotte, Fla.

In the opener, senior shortstop Logan Hronis (Rocky River/St. Edward) singled home a run that gave the Bishops a 1-0 lead, but the Eagles scored the next 4 runs to take the win.

Freshman second baseman James DiBiasio (Westlake) and Hronis drove in runs as the Bishops took a 3-0 lead in the second inning of the nightcap, but Benedictine closed to within 3-1 in the third.

Hronis plated DiBiasio with an infield grounder to give the Bishops a 4-1 lead in the fourth, McComas added a 2-run double later in the inning, and Hall's 2-run single added to the lead. Sophomore outfielder Zach Frentsos (Delaware/Hayes) and sophomore outfielder Eric Livingston (Delaware/Hayes) also had RBI singles during the frame.

Benedictine rallied to within 11-7 by scoring 6 times in the bottom of the fifth, collecting 4 hits, 2 walks and a Bishop error, but that was as close as the Eagles would come.

Frentsos was 3-for-3, while Hronis drove in 3 runs, McComas was 2-for-2 with 2 RBI, and Hall went 2-for-4 with 2 runs scored and 2 RBI.

Freshman lefthander Mason Farr (West Lafayette, Ind.) pitched the first 4-plus innings to collect his first collegiate win. Livingston got the last 2 outs for his first save of the season.

In the opener, the Bishops struck with 2 out in the third as DiBiasio singled, Frentsos reached on an error by Eagle shortstop Ulises Ortiz, and Hronis followed with a single to score DiBiasio.

Benedictine came up with 3 runs in the fourth, with Kenny Burdi lining a 2-run double and Kevin Graham following with a run-scoring triple, and Gino Miglio's sacrifice fly in the fifth accounted for the 4-1 fina.

DiBiasio and Frentsos had 2 hits apiece for the Bishops.

Senior righthander Greg Vasami (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Rye Neck) was charged with the loss.
