March 12, 2009

[ Logan Hronis ]Senior shortstop Logan Hronis (Rocky River/St. Edward) singled home what proved to be the game-winning run as Ohio Wesleyan edged Charleston in the opener of a non-conference doubleheader on Thursday in Port Charlotte, Fla.

In the nightcap, Charleston's Mike Morrissette blanked the Bishops on 3 hits as the Golden Eagles salvaged a split of the twinbill.

Charleston took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second of the opener on an RBI single by Andy Stichter, but the Bishops got the run back in the bottom of the inning on an RBI double by sophomore second baseman Josh Gardner (Youngstown/Boardman). Kyle Root's RBI single in the third restored the lead to the Golden Eagles.

Ohio Wesleyan answered in the bottom of the third, with senior outfielder Matt Rhode (Port Clinton) leading off with a single and freshman first baseman Tim Knezovich (Columbus/Briggs) following with a double. Two outs later, freshman first baseman Nathan Strome (Sidney) doubled home both runners, giving the Bishops the lead, and Hronis followed with a single that scored Strome for a 4-2 Bishop lead.

The Golden Eagles closed to within 4-3 with an unearned run in the sixth, but junior righthander Matthew Struble (Defiance/Edon) worked out of that jam, then stranded 2 runners in the seventh to finish off the complete-game win.

Struble scattered 8 hits while striking out 5 and walking 1 en route to his first win of the season.

In the nightcap, the Golden Eagles scored in the third, fourth, fifth, and sixth innings on the way to the win.

Freshman righthander Robbie Shane (Hilliard/Bishop Ready) was the starting and losing pitcher for Ohio Wesleyan.
