Junior catcher Steve Ruygrok (Centennial, Colo./Cherry Creek) and senior shortstop Logan Hronis (Rocky River/St. Edward) drove in runs in the top of the 10th inning to give Ohio Wesleyan a sweep of a non-conference doubleheader on Friday in Port Charlotte, Fla.
In the opener, freshman second baseman James DiBiasio (Westlake) drove home what proved to be the deciding run in the sixth inning, helping the Bishops to the win.
Trailing, 1-0, in the third inning of the opener, Ohio Wesleyan took the lead when DiBiasio singled and sophomore outfielder Zach Frentsos (Delaware/Hayes) followed with a drive that was misplayed by Quaker leftfielder Zach Butler, with DiBiasio scoring and Frentsos winding up on second. Freshman first baseman Tim Knezovich (Columbus/Briggs) followed with a single to score Frentsos.
The Bishops added 2 more runs in the sixth. Senior outfielder Matt Rhode (Port Clinton) and sophomore second baseman Josh Gardner (Youngstown/Boardman) singled, and DiBiasio followed with a double, with Rhode scoring and Gardner thrown out at the plate on the play. Frentsos followed with a single, moving DiBiasio to third, and DiBiasio scored on an error by Quaker second baseman Shawn Shelton.
Wilmington cut the deficit to 4-2 in the top of the seventh on Jason Iles's RBI single, but freshman righthander Andrew Cox (Ashville/Teays Valley) came on to get the last 2 outs to preserve the win.
Senior righthander Greg Vasami (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Rye Neck) pitched the first 6.1 innings, allowing 7 hits and striking out 5.
In the nightcap, Wilmington took a 1-0 lead in the first only to see the Bishops answer with an RBI single by Hronis in the second.
The Quakers pushed across a pair of runs in the third, but Hronis singled home runs in the fourth and sixth innings to tie the game at 3-3.
Ohio Wesleyan took the lead in the top of the 10th as Frentsos led off with a double, moved to third on an infield out, and scored on Ruygrok's single. One out later, Hronis doubled in Ruygrok for an insurance run.
Hronis went 4-for-5 and drove in 4 of the Bishops' 5 runs, while Ruygrok was 2-for-3 and scored 4 of the team's 5 runs.
Cox picked up the win with 4.0 innings of 1-hit relief.
