![]() Carthage 11, Ohio Wesleyan 7 March 14, 2009 Ohio Wesleyan jumped to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning as DiBiasio, sophomore outfielder Zach Frentsos (Delaware/Hayes), and freshman first baseman Tim Knezovich (Columbus/Briggs), with Knezovich's double plating both runners. Walks to sophomore outfielder Eric Livingston (Delaware/Hayes) and senior shortstop Logan Hronis (Rocky River/St. Edward) loaded the bases, and a walk to senior third baseman Eric McComas (Beverly Hills, Mich./Birmingham Groves) forced home Knezovich for a 3-0 lead, but sophomore second baseman Josh Gardner (Youngstown/Boardman) bounced into a double play to end the inning. Carthage responded with 4 runs in the bottom of the first. With 2 out, John Lequia singled, moved to second on a passed ball, and scored on a single by Mike Hughes. Will Hodges followed with a single before Josh Albers homered down the leftfield line to give the Red Men a 4-3 lead. The Bishops tied the game in the fourth as McComas walked and Gardner followed with a bunt single. After senior outfielder Matt Rhode (Port Clinton) moved the runners up with a sacrifice, DiBiasio lined to Carthage shortstop Joe Ferro, but Ferro's flip to second base to try to double up Gardner was wild, allowing McComas to score the tying run. Ferro got that run back for the Redmen in the bottom of the inning, singling home Tony Gliffe, who had singled to lead off the inning. Hronis led off the Ohio Wesleyan sixth with a double, and moved to third when Gardner greeted reliever Bryan Kieffer with a single. After Rhode walked to load the bases, DiBiasio lofted a fly ball to center to score Hronis and tie the game at 5-5. Once again, Carthage responded in kind, with Lequia singling home a run and Hughes adding a 2-run single to give the Red Men an 8-5 lead. Lequia and Albers also singled in runs during Carthage's 3-run eighth inning, helping the Red Men increase the lead to 11-5. Ohio Wesleyan rallied in the ninth, with DiBiasio and Frentsos leading off the inning with singles, and Livingston adding a 2-run double later in the inning. Frentsos was 3-for-5 for the Bishops. Freshman lefthander Mitchell Monke (Springfield/North) was charged with the loss in relief. Albers was 2-for-5 with 4 RBI for Carthage, while Hughes went 4-for-4 with 3 RBI. Kieffer was credited with the win, working 3.2 innings in relief. |
