Wabash 2, Ohio Wesleyan 1
Ohio Wesleyan 6, Wabash 4

March 22, 2009

Sophomore outfielder Scott Wise (Delaware/Hayes) and sophomore second baseman Josh Gardner (Youngstown/Boardman) drove in runs during a 2-run fourth inning that put Ohio Wesleyan ahead to stay in the nightcap of a North Coast Athletic Conference West Division doubleheader against Wabash on Sunday in Crawfordsville, Ind.

In the opener, Wabash's Matt Dodaro drew a bases-loaded walk with 2 out in the bottom of the 10th to give the Little Giants a win.

Ohio Wesleyan took a 1-0 lead in the first inning of the nightcap when sophomore outfielder Zach Frentsos (Delaware/Hayes) tripled and scored on an infield out by freshman first baseman Tim Knezovich (Columbus/Briggs).

Wabash took the lead with RBI singles by John Holm and David Seibel in the bottom of the first, and made it 3-1 on Jake Thomas's sacrifice fly in the second.

The Bishops tied the game in the third, loading the bases when Gardner was hit by a pitch, freshman second baseman James DiBiasio (Westlake) singled and Frentsos walked. Gardner scored when Knezovich bounced into a double play, and DiBiasio scored on a wild pitch to make it 3-3.

Ohio Wesleyan took the lead in the fourth when sophomore outfielder Eric Livingston (Delaware/Hayes) reached on an error by Wabash second baseman Joe Johnson, then scored on Wise's double. Wise moved to third on an infield out by senior third baseman Eric McComas (Beverly Hills, Mich./Birmingham Groves) and scored on Gardner's single down the leftfield line. DiBiasio followed with a double to center, but Gardner was thrown out trying to score to end the inning.

The Bishops added a run in the fifth when Frentsos singled, took second on a wild pitch, moved to third on an infield out, and scored on a sacrifice fly by junior catcher Steve Ruygrok (Centennial, Colo./Cherry Creek).

Thomas homered with 2 down in the bottom of the seventh to bring the Little Giants within 6-4, but that was as close as the hosts would come.

Frentsos went 3-for-3 and DiBiasio was 2-for-4 to spark the Ohio Wesleyan offense.

Freshman righthander Kevin Schindler (Mentor) worked the final 4.0 innings in relief to earn the win for Ohio Wesleyan. Senior righthander Greg Vasami (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Rye Neck) started for the Bishops and pitched the first 3.0 innings.

Andrew Smart pitched the complete game for Wabash.

In the opener, the Little Giants took a 1-0 lead in the second when Tanner Coggins singled and scored on a double by P.J. Tyson.

Ohio Wesleyan answered with a run in the top of the third when Gardner led off with a double, moved to third on DiBiasio's infield out, and scored on Frentsos's infield out.

Livingston and Wabash's Mike Korfhagen took over from there, trading zeroes through the eighth inning.

The Bishops threatened in the fifth, loading the bases when Gardner was hit by a pitch, DiBiasio doubled, and Frentsos walked, but Korfhagen retired senior shortstop Logan Hronis (Rocky River/St. Edward) on a fly ball to end the threat.

Frentsos led off the eighth with a single and moved to second on Hronis's sacrifice, but after a walk to Ruygrok, Korfhagen coaxed Knezovich to bounce into an inning-ending double play.

Wabash got a runner to second base in the fifth and to third base in the ninth, but the Bishops worked out of the threat each time.

The Little Giants pushed across the game-winner in the 10th when Tyson led off with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice. Chris Deig singled to shortstop, and the runners moved up on a passed ball. After a walk to Brian Lares, freshman righthander Andrew Cox (Ashville/Teays Valley) got Thomas to line to third for the second out, but Dodaro worked the walk to force home the winning run.

Livingston pitched the first 8.0 innings, allowing 3 hits while striking out 12 and walking none. Cox worked the final 1.2 innings and was charged with the loss.

Keegan Leckrone was the winning pitcher in relief of Korfhagen, who yielded 4 hits while striking out 2 and walking 4.
