Thomas More 5, Ohio Wesleyan 1

March 24, 2009

Thomas More built a 4-0 lead and went on to defeat Ohio Wesleyan in non-conference action on Tuesday at Littick Field.

Freshman righthander Robbie Shane (Hilliard/Bishop Ready) faced the minimum through 3 innings, but Thomas More starter Andrew Carmack matched him zero for zero, working out of a 2-on, one-out jam in the first and allowing a one-out hit in the second but getting out of that inning as well.

The Saints took the lead with 2 out in the fourth when Sam Schmeltzer was hit by a pitch and Andrew Thole broke up Shane's no-hitter with a solid single to center. Marty Kersting followed with a bouncer up the middle. Freshman second baseman James DiBiasio (Westlake) dove to his right and got a glove on the ball, which caromed to senior shortstop Logan Hronis (Rocky River/St. Edward). Hronis fired to third, getting a surprised Schmeltzer in a rundown, but Schmeltzer scored when sophomore third baseman Josh Gardner (Youngstown/Boardman) threw wildly to the plate.

Thomas More added 2 runs in the fifth as Spencer Franzreb led off with a single. Max Robbins followed with a grounder up the middle which Hronis gloved on the second-base side of the bag. Hronis tried to tag Franzreb going into second base, but the Saint designated hitter tightroped around the tag and all hands were safe. Nick Seizer singled home Franzreb, with Robbins taking third on the throw to the plate, and T.J. Souder followed with a chopper that Gardner misplayed, allowing Robbins to score.

Robbins's RBI single in the sixth increased the Thomas More lead to 4-0.

Ohio Wesleyan got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth. DiBiasio reached on an error by Saint shortstop Chris Fishburn to open the inning, and sophomore outfielder Scott Wise (Delaware/Hayes) followed with a single. Two outs later, Hronis singled to left, with DiBiasio scoring on a fielding error by Thomas More leftfielder Kersting.

Thole's RBI single in the seventh wrapped up the day's scoring.

Shane pitched the first 6.0 innings and was charged with the loss.

Carmack worked the first 6.0 innings to claim the win for Thomas More, and Michael Murray pitched 3.0 innings of hitless relief to collect a save.
