Heidelberg 6, Ohio Wesleyan 5

April 1, 2009

[ Eric McComas ]Senior third baseman Eric McComas (Beverly Hills, Mich./Birmingham Groves) drove in 3 runs to help Ohio Wesleyan build a 5-1 lead, but 10th-ranked Heidelberg rallied to send the game into extra innings, then pushed across the game-winner in the 11th inning to defeat the Bishops on Wednesday in Tiffin.

Ohio Wesleyan took a 2-0 lead in the second when junior catcher Steve Ruygrok (Centennial, Colo./Cherry Creek) and senior shortstop Logan Hronis (Rocky River/St. Edward) opened the inning with singles and moved up to second and third on a sacrifice by freshman first baseman Tim Knezovich (Columbus/Briggs). McComas delivered a single up the middle to plate both runners and put the Bishops on the scoreboard.

Heidelberg closed to within 2-1 on Gar Keen's RBI single in the third, but the Bishops answered with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth.

Hronis lined a one-out single and stole second before scoring on Knezovich's double down the rightfield line. McComas followed with a single to right center, scoring Knezovich for a 4-1 Bishop lead.

Hronis singled home sophomore outfielder Scott Wise (Delaware/Hayes) for a 5-1 Ohio Wesleyan lead in the fifth inning.

Biagio Boytim lined a solo homer to bring Heidelberg within 5-2 in the sixth, and that margin remained intact going into the bottom of the ninth.

With one out, Willie Brechun was hit by a pitch. After a walk to L.B. Emrhein, the runners moved to second and third on a wild pitch before Jeremy Wentworth singled home Brechun to make it 5-3. Freshman righthander Andrew Cox (Ashville/Teays Valley) retired Jason Lash on an infield grounder for the second out, with the runners moving to second and third on the play, and Keen followed with a single to left center to tie the game at 5-5. After a single to Andrew Buelow, freshman righthander Robbie Shane (Hilliard/Bishop Ready) came on and retired Boytim to send the game to extra innings.

The Student Princes ended the game in the 11th as Emrhein led off with a single, Wentworth walked, and Lash singled home Emrhein with the winning run.

Hronis went 3-for-5 while McComas and Ruygrok had 2 hits apiece for Ohio Wesleyan.

Shane was charged with the loss in relief.

Andy Lowe, the last of 4 Heidelberg pitchers, picked up the win.
