Ohio Wesleyan 7, Urbana 6

April 8, 2009

Sophomore outfielder Scott Wise (Delaware/Hayes) scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift Ohio Wesleyan over Urbana in non-conference play on Wednesday at Littick Field.

With the score tied at 6-6, freshman second baseman James DiBiasio (Westlake) led off with a double to right center. With the Blue Knight defense charging plateward in anticipation of a sacrifice, Wise swung away but hit a one-hopper back to Urbana pitcher Shane Pfouts. Pfouts threw to second, getting DiBiasio in a rundown, but DiBiasio kept the play alive long enough to allow Wise to reach second base safely. One out later, junior catcher Steve Ruygrok (Centennial, Colo./Cherry Creek) smacked a grounder that got past Urbana second baseman Matt Netherly, allowing Wise to score the game-winning run.

Netherly had given the Blue Knights a 1-0 lead with an RBI single in the first, and Zach Roll's solo shot in the second made it a 2-0 game.

Ohio Wesleyan closed to within 2-1 on an RBI double by freshman first baseman Tim Knezovich (Columbus/Briggs) in the fourth, then took the lead with 5 runs in the fifth. Sophomore outfielder Zach Frentsos (Delaware/Hayes) and Ruygrok drove in runs in the inning, senior shortstop Logan Hronis (Rocky River/St. Edward) doubled, and Knezovich added an RBI single. The scoring closed out with sophomore outfielder Eric Livingston (Delaware/Hayes) on third and Knezovich on first. Knezovich took off for second and got into a rundown, eventually making it back to first base safely as Livingston crossed the plate.

Urbana closed to within 6-3 in the eighth as Russ Chambers singled and moved to second on Netherly's infield out. After a walk to Owen Donelon, Tyler Rinker worked the count full. With the runners moving, the 3-2 pitch to Rinker was a called strike three, but Ruygrok's throw to third for the strikeout-throwout double play was high, allowing Chambers to score.

Livingston relieved in the ninth looking for his second save of the season, but with one out, Andrew Harrell was hit by a pitch and Jordan Baker singled past Gardner to bring up Chambers, who lofted a shot over the fence in straightaway center to tie the game at 6-6.

Livingston got out of the inning without any further damage and picked up the win when the Bishops rallied in the bottom half of the frame.

DiBiasio, Hronis, and Knezovich had 2 hits apiece for Ohio Wesleyan.

Pfouts, who held the Bishops to 3 hits in 4.0 innings of relief, was the losing pitcher for Urbana.
