Otterbein 11, Ohio Wesleyan 7

April 24, 2009

[ Logan Hronis ]Sophomore outfielder Zach Frentsos (Delaware/Hayes) smashed a home run to help the Bishops to a 7-3 lead, and sophomore outfielder Eric Livingston (Delaware/Hayes) tied a school record, but Otterbein rallied to take a non-conference win over Ohio Wesleyan on Friday at Littick Field.

The Cardinals struck for a 2-0 lead in the top of the first, parlaying a pair of hits, an error by senior shortstop Logan Hronis (Rocky River/St. Edward), and an infield out into the 2 runs.

That lead lasted all of 3 batters in the bottom of the first as freshman second baseman James DiBiasio (Westlake) led off with a double, and one out later, Frentsos tied the game with a shot over the fence in centerfield. Ohio Wesleyan added a run later in the inning on an RBI single by junior catcher Steve Ruygrok (Centennial, Colo./Cherry Creek).

Otterbein's Charlie Cahill led off the second with a homer to tie the game at 3-3, but the Bishops erupted for 4 runs in the bottom of the inning.

DiBiasio again led off with a double, and the Bishops loaded the bases with a single by sophomore outfielder Scott Wise (Delaware/Hayes) and a walk to Frentsos. Hronis followed with a single to score DiBiasio, and Wise scored on a fielder's choice by senior third baseman Eric McComas (Beverly Hills, Mich./Birmingham Groves). Livingston then doubled in Frentsos and McComas to give the Bishops a 7-3 lead.

The Cardinals closed to within 7-6 in the sixth with the help of Brandon Gessner's 2-run homer, and took the lead with a 3-run seventh, with Cahill and John Sansbury collecting RBI singles. Otterbein tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the ninth, with Sansbury's RBI double down the rightfield line the key hit.

Livingston went 5-for-5, tying the school record for hits in a game accomplished many times previously, the last by Hronis at Mount Union on March 29, 2007. Hronis and DiBiasio each went 2-for-4.

Ohio Wesleyan turned 4 double plays in the game, tying the school record accomplished 4 times before, the last time at Denison on April 16, 2000.

Freshman righthander Robbie Shane (Hilliard/Bishop Ready) was charged with the loss in relief.

Seth Winegar was the winning pitcher in relief for Otterbein, with Alex Hayes credited with a save.
