Kenyon 12, Ohio Wesleyan 5

May 3, 2009

[ Zach Frentsos ]Sophomore outfielder Zach Frentsos (Delaware/Hayes) smacked a 2-run double to highlight a 3-run third inning that staked the Bishops to a 3-0 lead, but Kenyon scored 9 straight runs to defeat Ohio Wesleyan in Game 3 of a semifinal series of the North Coast Athletic Conference tournament on Sunday at Littick Field.

With the win, Kenyon takes the series, 2 games to 1, and advances to face Wooster in the NCAC tournament finals on Thursday and Friday in Springfield.

The Bishops jumped on Lord starter Tom Boucher for 3 runs in the third. Freshman first baseman Tim Knezovich (Columbus/Briggs) led off with a double, and after a walk to sophomore second baseman Josh Gardner (Youngstown/Boardman), freshman second baseman James DiBiasio (Westlake) forced Gardner at second to leave runners at the corners with one out. Frentsos followed with a double to right center, scoring both runners, and came around to score on a single by senior shortstop Logan Hronis (Rocky River/St. Edward).

Kenyon answered in the top of the fourth, tying the game on back-to-back home runs, a 2-run shot by Craig Wocl and a solo shot by Tom Hardacker.

Ohio Wesleyan manufactured a run to take a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the inning. Senior third baseman Eric McComas (Beverly Hills, Mich./Birmingham Groves) led off with a bunt single, moved to second on a sacrifice, took third when junior catcher Steve Ruygrok (Centennial, Colo./Cherry Creek) reached on an error by Kenyon shortstop Jake Calcei, and scored when the Bishop runners engineered a textbook double steal.

The Lords took the lead for good in the fifth, tying the game on an error by Hronis before Wocl cleared the bases with a 3-run homer that gave Kenyon a 7-4 lead.

Kenyon added 2 more runs in the seventh with the help of Alex Cultice's RBI single, got a 2-run homer from Zach Ciccone in the eighth, and tacked on another run on Will Smith's RBI single in the ninth.

The Bishops threatened in the ninth, loading the bases with nobody out on a walk to junior outfielder Jared Turner (Versailles) and singles by DiBiasio and Frentsos. Hronis plated a run with a sacrifice fly to deep left, but Kenyon's Nate Fedor and Austin Faught got the last 2 outs without any further damage.

Frentsos went 3-for-5 to highlight the Ohio Wesleyan offense.

Freshman righthander Kevin Schindler (Mentor) pitched the first 4.0 innings for Ohio Wesleyan, allowing 3 runs while striking out 4 and walking 1. Freshman righthander Robbie Shane (Hilliard/Bishop Ready) was charged with the loss in relief.

Wocl was 3-for-6 with 3 runs scored and 5 RBI for Kenyon, while Calcei and Ciccone scored 3 runs apiece.

Boucher worked the first 6.0 innings to pick up the win for Kenyon.
