Washington 24, Ohio Wesleyan 3

Oct. 25, 2008

Buck Smith tossed a pair of touchdown passes as Washington built a 17-0 halftime lead and went on to defeat Ohio Wesleyan in non-conference action on Saturday in St. Louis.

The Bears forced the first turnover of the game when Kyle Huber intercepted a pass from sophomore quarterback Mike Fisher (Chagrin Falls/Kenston) and returned it 20 yards to the Ohio Wesleyan 25-yard line on the opening series of the game.

Smith connected with Tom Gulyas for a first down at the 13-yard line, and on third-and-8 from the Bishop 11, Smith hit Gulyas again for the touchdown with 10:31 left in the first quarter.

Brand Rogalski booted a 32-yard field goal later in the quarter to extend the Washington lead to 10-0, and after forcing a Bishop punt, the Bears took over on their own 41-yard line. After Sam Kentor ran 12 yards for a first down, Smith found Miles Chan for 20 yards and a first down at the Bishop 9, and on the next play hit Kyle Gray for the touchdown and a 17-0 lead with 13:30 to play in the first half.

Fisher and junior running back Steven Brown (Redford Township, Mich./Redford) moved Ohio Wesleyan into Bear territory on the Bishops' next drive, with Fisher connecting with Brown on a 20-yard pass play, then Brown picking up 2 yards on a fourth-and-1 call from the Bear 46-yard line before the drive stalled and Ohio Wesleyan punted from the Washington 48.

The Bishops put together a lengthy drive on their first possession of the second half, getting one first down on a roughing the punter penalty and another on Fisher's 7-yard run on third-and-6 from the Ohio Wesleyan 46. Consecutive gains of 13 and 14 yards by Fisher moved the ball to the Bear 20, and the Bishops got on the scoreboard when senior kicker Chris Kras (Aurora) connected on a 32-yard field goal.

Washington finished off the day's scoring with an 80-yard, 11-play drive midway through the fourth quarter, capped by Matt Glenn's 6-yard touchdown run with 6:41 left in the game.

Fisher led the Bishops with 66 yards on 17 carries and completed 9 of 14 passes for 37 yards. Senior running back Kyle Adams (North Canton/Hoover) caught a team-high 5 passes for 12 yards and Brown had 4 catches for 26 yards.

Defensive standouts for the Bishops included sophomore linebacker Brian Janiak (Hilton Head Island, S.C./Hilton Head), who made a team-high 8 tackles; junior safety Rylan Mitter-Burke (Marlborough, Mass./Marlboro), who had 7 tackles, including 1 for loss, and a pass breakup; senior end Britan Tolliver (Croton/Johnstown Northridge), who had 6 stops, including 2 sacks and 3 for loss; and sophomore tackle Taylor Smith (Marengo/Highland), who made 6 tackles, including 1 for loss, and intercepted a pass.
