Seven Bishops Picked to All-NCAC Teams,
Marotta Named NCAC Newcomer of Year

[ Alyse Marotta ]Seven Ohio Wesleyan University field hockey players were named to the All-North Coast Athletic Conference teams, it was announced today.

Sophomore attacker Christa Cocumelli (Dublin/Bishop Watterson), sophomore defender Hannah Coughlin (Dublin/Scioto) and freshman midfielder Alyse Marotta (Dublin/Jerome) were first-team All-NCAC choices; sophomore attacker Lilly Jianas (Shawnee Mission, Kan./Pembroke Hill), sophomore back Melissa Martin (Poway, Calif.) and freshman midfielder Jessica Wright (Lancaster) were second-team All-NCAC selections; and freshman midfielder Jen Doud (Collingswood, N.J.) was an honorable mention pick.

Marotta was named NCAC Newcomer of the Year. She ranked fifth on the team in scoring with 4 goals and converted both of the penalty strokes she attempted this season.

Cocumelli ranked second on the team in scoring with 5 goals and 6 assists. She was a first-team all-conference selection for the second straight season.

Coughlin and Martin led an Ohio Wesleyan defense that allowed 31 goals and compiled 3 shutouts in 19 games. Martin led the Bishops with 4 defensive saves, while Coughlin contributed 3 defensive saves.

Jianas led the Bishops and ranked ninth in the NCAC in scoring with 8 goals and 2 assists. Her 4 game-winning goals tied for second in the conference. Jianas was a second-team all-conference pick for the second straight season.

Wright, a defensive midfielder, had 2 defensive saves and contributed 1 assist on the offensive end. She was an honorable mention All-NCAC pick in 2007.

Doud, also a defensive midfielder, had 1 defensive save this season.

Ohio Wesleyan finished the season with a 12-7 record. The Battling Bishops finished with a 9-3 record in NCAC competition, finishing in second place in the final league standings, and advanced to the semifinals of the conference tournament.
