![]() Ohio Wesleyan 2, Wittenberg 1 Oct. 3, 2008 The win gave the Bishops a sweep of the season series with the Tigers, marking the second straight season in which Ohio Wesleyan has swept Wittenberg. Fleck's goal came on one of the few scoring chances during a defense-oriented second half. The play began when sophomore attacker Christa Cocumelli (Dublin/Bishop Watterson) took a shot from the middle of the circle. Freshman attacker Abigail Walsh (Millville, Mass./Blackstone-Millville) redirected the shot en route, and Fleck tipped it in at the left post to put Ohio Wesleyan ahead to stay with 29:21 left in regulation time. Ohio Wesleyan had taken a 1-0 lead in the early going when freshman attacker Mimi Anthony (Millbrook, N.Y./Millbrook School) slotted a pass to Cocumelli, who made a run up the middle and fired a shot to the left side of the Tiger cage. Freshman attacker Macie Miller (Kettering/Fairmont) was there for the tip-in, breaking the scoreless tie less than 5 minutes into the action. The Tigers evened the game in the 22nd minute, with Kelley Herde setting up Tori Casanta for the score. Wittenberg had an excellent chance to take the lead just over 2 minutes later when Tiger forward Boo Vernon was off on a breakaway, but Ohio Wesleyan keeper Krista Murray (Rochester Hills, Mich./University Liggett) made a stick save to preserve the tie. The Ohio Wesleyan defense protected the slim lead during the second half, holding the Tigers to only 2 shots during the final 35 minutes of regulation play. Ohio Wesleyan outshot Wittenberg, 19-8. Murray finished with 2 saves, while Liana Began had 4 saves in the Tiger cage. |
