Ohio Wesleyan 5, Earlham 1

Oct. 9, 2008

[ Lilly Jianas ]Sophomore attacker Erin Fleck (Columbus/Bishop Watterson) scored the tying goal and sophomore attacker Lilly Jianas (Shawnee Mission, Kan./Pembroke Hill) followed with what proved to be the game-winner to rally Ohio Wesleyan past Earlham for a North Coast Athletic Conference win on Thursday at Selby Field.

The Quakers jumped to an early 1-0 lead when Nicole VanScyoc scored from a scramble in front of the Bishop cage just over 3 minutes into the action, with Cassie Gage credited with an assist on the play.

Earlham's defense preserve the lead for most of the first half, but the Bishops finally broke through to even the game. After a Bishop penalty corner, sophomore defender Hannah Coughlin (Dublin/Scioto) sent the ball toward the Quaker cage, and Fleck ran the ball down and flicked it high into the cage to make it a 1-1 game with 8:36 left in the first half.

The Bishops took the lead shortly thereafter, when Earlham keeper Katherine McDonough saved a shot but Jianas was there to knock in the rebound with 4:04 left in the first half.

Jianas was on the other end of a similar play early in the second half, sending a shot at the Earlham cage that McDonough stopped, with sophomore attacker Christa Cocumelli (Dublin/Bishop Watterson) there to put the rebound into the back of the Earlham cage.

Freshman attacker Abigail Walsh (Millville, Mass./Blackstone-Millville) scored off a centering pass from Cocumelli midway through the second half, and freshman attacker Lex Kondas (Powell/Olentangy Liberty) wrapped up the Ohio Wesleyan scoring with another rebound goal with 1:30 remaining in regulation time.

Ohio Wesleyan outshot Earlham, 25-9. Junior Krista Murray (Rochester Hills, Mich./University Liggett) made 3 saves during the first half, while freshman Liz Searfos (Powell/Olentangy Liberty) had 3 saves during the second half. McDonough finished with 6 saves for Earlham.
