Ohio Wesleyan 4, Transylvania 1

Oct. 12, 2008

[ Abigail Walsh ]Freshman attacker Abigail Walsh (Millville, Mass./Blackstone-Millville) scored a pair of second-half goals, including the game-winner, as Ohio Wesleyan broke a 1-1 halftime tie and went on to defeat Transylvania in non-conference play on Sunday at Selby Field.

With the score tied at 1-1 at the intermission, Walsh took a crossing pass from freshman attacker Macie Miller (Kettering/Fairmont) and put the ball into the back of the Pioneer cage just 44 seconds into the second half.

The Bishops added some insurance midway through the second half when Walsh scored after an Ohio Wesleyan penalty corner. The play started when freshman midfielder Alyse Marotta (Dublin/Jerome) took a shot from the left side, and sophomore attacker Christa Cocumelli (Dublin/Bishop Watterson) sent the ball from the right side back to the left side, where Walsh tipped it in with 19:34 left in regulation time.

Freshman attacker Lex Kondas (Powell/Olentangy Liberty) wrapped up the Ohio Wesleyan scoring with a goal in the final minute of regulation time.

Ohio Wesleyan had taken a 1-0 lead midway through the first half when Marotta blasted a shot from the left side into the back of the Transylvania cage.

The Pioneers evened the game after earning a penalty corner, with Shawna Corman hitting a shot from the middle of the circle, and Whitney Mitchell tipping it in at the right post with 6:32 left in the first half.

Transylvania had a chance to take the lead in the closing minutes of the half when Mitchell had a breakaway and eluded Bishop keeper Krista Murray (Rochester Hills, Mich./University Liggett) for an open look at the goal, but sophomore defender Hannah Coughlin (Dublin/Scioto) came in from behind and cleared the ball off the goal line to preserve the tie.

Ohio Wesleyan outshot Transylvania, 46-8. Murray played the first half in the Bishop goal, and freshman Liz Searfos (Powell/Olentangy Liberty) had 1 save during the second half. Megan Blandford finished with 17 saves for Transylvania.
