Ohio Wesleyan 1, Kenyon 0

Oct. 16, 2008

[ Alyse Marotta ]Freshman midfielder Alyse Marotta (Dublin/Jerome) converted a penalty stroke for the game's only goal, giving Ohio Wesleyan a North Coast Athletic Conference victory over defending conference tri-champion Kenyon on Thursday in Gambier.

The win could prove an important one deciding the NCAC championship race as well as the field for the conference tournament. Last season, Kenyon swept the season series from Ohio Wesleyan, winning by scores of 1-0 at Selby Field and 2-0 in Gambier. Kenyon finished with an 8-4 conference record, deadlocked in a 3-way tie for the conference championship, and Ohio Wesleyan was a game behind, tied for fourth place at 7-5, and lost a tiebreaker for the final spot in the NCAC tournament.

Marotta was awarded a penalty stroke just over 3 minutes into the game and converted it for a 1-0 Bishop lead. The stroke was the first successful one of the season for Ohio Wesleyan.

After that, the stars were the defenders for both teams. Sophomore defender Hannah Coughlin (Dublin/Scioto) preserved the Bishop lead with a defensive save, while Bishop keeper Krista Murray (Rochester Hills, Mich./University Liggett) stopped 6 Kenyon shots.

Meanwhile, Kenyon keeper Karen Thompson had 2 saves and defender Perrin Legg was credited with a defensive save.

Kenyon outshot Ohio Wesleyan, 12-5.
