![]() Ohio Wesleyan 3, Kenyon 2 Oct. 22, 2008 The win gave the Bishops a sweep of the season series with the defending conference tri-champions and kept Ohio Wesleyan in a tie for first place in the league with Wooster, a 2-0 winner over Denison on Wednesday. Much of the action in the early minutes of the game took place in the midfield, with neither team putting together an opportunity to score until the eighth minute, when Ohio Wesleyan earned a penalty corner. The Bishops took advantage of the chance, with sophomore midfielder Jessica Wright (Lancaster) sending a shot from the right side of the circle toward the left post, where freshman attacker Abigail Walsh (Millville, Mass./Blackstone-Millville) tipped it in to give Ohio Wesleyan the lead. Kenyon nearly tied the game just over 2 minutes later. The Ladies had earned a penalty corner, and Joy Leaman fired a rocket that bounced off the right post and was cleared by the Bishop defense. Leaman figured in Kenyon's next good scoring chance as well, that also coming on a penalty corner. Leaman fielded the entry pass and flicked the ball on a majestic arch toward the goal mouth. Ohio Wesleyan keeper Liz Searfos (Powell/Olentangy Liberty) came out to make a play on the ball, but Kenyon's Perrin Legg got behind Searfos and stuffed the ball inside the left post with 6:24 left in the period. Ohio Wesleyan took the lead early in the second half as sophomore defender Hannah Coughlin (Dublin/Scioto) sent a long hit into the Kenyon circle and Jianas fired a shot to the left post for a 2-1 Bishop lead with 27:22 to play. Sophia Daly brought the Ladies back, scoring on a shot inside the left post with 12:46 left in regulation time. Jianas's game-winner came with 8:39 remaining when she pounced on a loose ball inside the circle and sent a shot into the left side of the Kenyon cage. The Ladies earned a couple of penalty corners during the final minute of play, but were unable to convert those chances into the tying goal and possible overtime. Kenyon outshot Ohio Wesleyan, 14-7. Searfos and junior Krista Murray (Rochester Hills, Mich./University Liggett) each played one half in the Ohio Wesleyan cage, while Kenyon keeper Karen Thompson had 1 save. |
