Oberlin 1, Ohio Wesleyan 0

Oct. 28, 2008

Oberlin broke a scoreless tie late in the first half and withstood a second-half barrage of Ohio Wesleyan scoring opportunities in upsetting the Bishops in North Coast Athletic Conference action on Tuesday in Oberlin.

The loss knocks Ohio Wesleyan out of a tie for first place in the NCAC title race, and was Oberlin's first league win of the season.

Ohio Wesleyan, now 9-2 in league play, must defeat first-place Wooster in the Bishops' regular-season finale on Friday to claim a share of the conference championship.

The Yeowomen took the lead with 1:36 left in the first half when Natasha Cohan and Ariel Schuster ran a give-and-go, with Cohan passing the ball to Schuster, then fielding the return pass and finishing the chance in front of the Ohio Wesleyan cage.

The Bishops dialed up the offensive pressure during the second half, outshooting the Yeowomen by a margin of 13-2 and enjoying a 12-0 edge in penalty corners, but were not able to convert those opportunities into the tying goal.

Ohio Wesleyan outshot Oberlin, 19-12. Junior Krista Murray (Rochester Hills, Mich./University Liggett) had 5 saves during the first half, and freshman Liz Searfos (Powell/Olentangy Liberty) was not tested during the second half. Manya Lulek finished with 12 saves in the Oberlin cage.
