Kenyon 2, Ohio Wesleyan 1

Nov. 5, 2008

[ Christa Cocumelli ]Freshman attacker Macie Miller (Kettering/Fairmont) scored to give Ohio Wesleyan a 1-0 lead, but Kenyon tallied a pair of goals off penalty corners, the latter with 2:49 left in regulation time, to upset the Bishops in a semifinal contest of the North Coast Athletic Conference tournament on Wednesday at Selby Field.

Kenyon advances to the tournament championship game to face top-seeded Wooster, a 3-2 winner over Wittenberg on Wednesday's other semifinal matchup.

Making their first-ever appearance in the NCAC tournament, the Bishops saw Kenyon put together the first good scoring chance of the game.

In the 10th minute, Sophia Daly got an open look at the Bishop cage after a Kenyon penalty corner, but sophomore defender Melissa Martin (Poway, Calif.) cleared the ball off the goal line, preserving the scoreless tie.

Kenyon had another good opportunity when Sasha Grumman sent a long pass through the defense, setting up Abby Westcott on a breakaway, but Westcott's shot was wide.

Ohio Wesleyan enjoyed the edge in play later in the half, with freshman attacker Abigail Walsh (Millville, Mass./Blackstone-Millville) getting off a pair of shots only to have Kenyon keeper Karen Thompson stop both of them.

The Bishops took the lead early in the second half when sophomore attacker Lilly Jianas (Shawnee Mission, Kan./Pembroke Hill) fired a shot from the left side and Miller reached back to redirect the shot into the right side of the Ladies' cage.

Two minutes later, freshman Liz Searfos (Powell/Olentangy Liberty) kept the Bishops on top by blocking Daly's shot from point-blank range, but the Ladies would receive a corner on the play. On the ensuing corner, Kenyon ran a textbook stick-stop play, with Perrin Legg playing the ball into the circle, Maggie Gilligan making the stop and Grumman finishing with a shot to the back of the Ohio Wesleyan cage, tying the game with 26:40 to play.

The Ladies took the lead on another penalty corner, with Daly fielding the entry pass, making a short run and squeezing off a shot for a 2-1 lead with 2:49 remaining in regulation time.

Kenyon outshot Ohio Wesleyan, 16-7. Junior Krista Murray (Rochester Hills, Mich./University Liggett) had 1 save during the first half, while Searfos had 2 saves during the second half. Thompson had 3 saves on the Kenyon cage.
