at GEICO Intercollegiate

[ Jeff Nieman ]Senior Jeff Nieman (Maineville/Cincinnati Moeller) was leading the way as Ohio Wesleyan was tied for second place in the team standings after the first round of the GEICO Intercollegiate tournament, hosted by Ohio Wesleyan on Friday at Hunter Golf Club in Savannah, Ga.

Southern Illinois was leading the field with a total of 301, with Ohio Wesleyan, Bryant, and Seton Hall tied for second place at 307. Yale was in fifth place at 308, followed by Lehigh (312), Appalachian State and Ohio Valley (314), and Harvard (317). Creighton rounded out the top 10 teams with a total of 320, followed by Wittenberg (321), Savannah State (326), Wheaton (330), and West Liberty State (334).

Nieman was tied for second place among individuals with an even-par 72, finishing the day one shot behind individual leader Patrick Scheil of Southern Illinois.

Junior Peter Joyce (Chevy Chase, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase) was tied for 16th place at 76, junior Jesse Chiero (Westerville/South) was tied for 20th place at 77, senior Andy Schillig (Pataskala/Licking Heights) was tied for 57th place with an 82, and senior Adam Claytor (Columbus/Wellington) was tied for 75th place at 85.

Ohio Wesleyan players competing as individuals included junior Michael Sarap (Cambridge), who was tied for 51st place with an 81, and junior Tommy Harman (Perrysburg), who was tied for 72nd place at 84.

The tournament's second round is scheduled for Friday, and the third round is scheduled for Saturday.
