at OWU/Strimer Memorial Invitational

[ Jeff Nieman ]Senior Jeff Nieman (Maineville/Cincinnati Moeller) was leading Ohio Wesleyan as the Bishops took the lead in the team standings after the first round of the Strimer Memorial Invitational on Friday at Glenross Golf Club.

Ohio Wesleyan had a first-round total of 294, leading Olivet by 2 strokes. Hope was in third place at 300, followed by Otterbein and Mount Union (301), Wittenberg (303), Centre and Denison (308), Baldwin-Wallace (311), Wooster (313), Spalding (317), Capital (325), Kenyon (327), and Hiram (345).

Mount Union's Lucas Murray had the individual lead with a first-round 69, with Olivet's Eric Ross and Wooster's Blake Sword tied for second place at 70.

Nieman was tied for fourth place among individuals with a 71.

Senior Andy Schillig (Pataskala/Licking Heights) was tied for sixth place at 72, junior Jesse Chiero (Westerville/South) was tied for 11th place with a 73, junior Peter Joyce (Chevy Chase, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase) was tied for 40th place with a 78, and junior Tommy Harman (Perrysburg) was tied for 54th place at 80.

Ohio Wesleyan players competing as individuals included sophomore Thomas Fox (Galion), who was tied for 11th place with a 73, and senior Kyle Martin (Dublin/Wellington) and senior Adam Claytor (Columbus/Wellington), who were tied for 21st place at 75.

The tournament's second round is scheduled for Saturday at Oakhaven Golf Club.

The Strimer Memorial Invitational honors the memory of coach Bob Strimer, who was involved in Ohio Wesleyan athletics for over half a century. During his tenure at Ohio Wesleyan, he served as athletics director for 22 years. He also served as head basketball coach, head golf coach, head baseball coach and was an assistant coach in football and track & field. After his retirement, Strimer remained active in athletics, alumni and development affairs for over 2 decades.
