at Wabash Invitational

[ Jesse Chiero ]Junior Jesse Chiero (Westerville/South) was leading Ohio Wesleyan as the Bishops moved into the lead after the first round of the Wabash Invitational, hosted by Wabash College on Saturday at Trophy Club Golf Course in Lebanon, Ind.

Ohio Wesleyan had the first-round lead with a total of 293, leading DePauw by 3 shots. Wittenberg was in third place at 313, followed by Denison (311), Allegheny (313), Wooster and Wabash (317), Kenyon (336), Hiram (377), and Oberlin (407).

The 36-hole event is the third of 4 regular-season tournaments which count toward determining the North Coast Athletic Conference's automatic qualifer for the NCAA Division III championships.

Chiero was tied with DePauw's Ronnie Harris for the individual lead, each with a one-under-par 71.

Junior Tommy Harman (Perrysburg) was tied for fifth place with a one-over-par 73, senior Andy Schillig (Pataskala/Licking Heights) was in seventh place at 74, and senior Jeff Nieman (Maineville/Cincinnati Moeller) and senior Adam Claytor (Columbus/Wellington) were included in a tie for eighth place at 75.

Senior Kyle Martin (Dublin/Wellington), competing as an individual, was tied for third place with an even-par 72.

The tournament's second round is scheduled for Sunday.
