at NCAA Division III championship

[ Tommy Harman ]Junior Tommy Harman (Perrysburg) and senior Andy Schillig (Pataskala/Licking Heights) were leading Ohio Wesleyan after the first day of the NCAA Division III championship tournament, hosted by Methodist College on Wednesday at the PGA Village course at Port St. Lucie, Fla.

Host Methodist was leading the field with a 9-under-par 279 on Wednesday. St. John's (Minn.) was in second place with an even-par 288, with Skidmore and Texas-Tyler tied for third place at 291. La Verne, LaGrange, and Emory were tied for fifth place at 292, with Otterbein (294), Illinois Wesleyan (295), and Wisconsin-Stout (296) rounding out the top 10 teams. Transylvania, Franklin & Marshall, and Redlands were tied for 11th place at 297, Carnegie-Mellon and Nebraska Wesleyan were tied for 14th place at 300, and Ohio Wesleyan and Oglethorpe were tied for 16th place at 301. Central (302), top-ranked Huntingdon (303) and Washington & Lee (303) completed the top 20 teams.

Harman and Schillig each shot a 73 to finish Wednesday's play in a tie for 32nd place among individuals. Junior Peter Joyce (Chevy Chase, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase) was tied for 89th place with a first-round 77, senior Jeff Nieman (Maineville/Cincinnati Moeller) was tied for 105th place at 78, and junior Jesse Chiero (Westerville/South) was tied for 154th place at 83.

The NCAA Division III championship tournament is scheduled to continue with the second round on Thursday.
