at Denison Fall Classic

[ Jeff Nieman ]Senior Andy Schillig (Pataskala/Licking Heights) and senior Jeff Nieman (Maineville/Cincinnati Moeller) were leading Ohio Wesleyan after the first round of the Denison Fall Classic, hosted by Denison University on Saturday at the Granville Golf Club.

Ohio Wesleyan was leading the tournament after the first day, with the Bishops' total of 288 leading John Carroll by 3 shots. Allegheny was in third place with 294 points, followed by Denison (296), DePauw (297), Mount Union (304), Wabash (305), Wittenberg (307), and Muskingum (308). Kenyon closed out the top 10 with a total of 309, followed by Ohio Northern (314), Baldwin-Wallace and Wooster (317), and Hiram (354).

The 36-hole event is the first of 4 regular-season tournaments which count toward determining the North Coast Athletic Conference's automatic qualifer for the NCAA Division III championships.

Schillig was tied for medalist honors with a first-round 69, while Nieman was tied for third place a single shot behind.

Junior Jesse Chiero (Westerville/South) was tied for eighth place at 72, while junior Jordan Benner (Beavercreek) and senior Adam Claytor (Columbus/Wellington) were tied for 38th place at 77.

Ohio Wesleyan players competing as individuals included senior Kyle Martin (Dublin/Wellington), who was tied for eighth place at 72; junior Michael Sarap (Cambridge), who was tied for 21st place with a 75; and the quintet of junior Tommy Harman (Perrysburg), junior Scott Hassee (Norwalk), junior Peter Joyce (Chevy Chase, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase), sophomore Thomas Fox (Galion), and sophomore Scott Morris (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks East), each of whom was tied for 25th place at 76.

The tournament's second round is scheduled for Sunday.
