Jan. 17, 2009

[ Kyle Holliday ]Senior wing Kyle Holliday (Van Wert) scored 8 points during a 13-2 second-half run that gave Ohio Wesleyan some breathing room, and senior wing Mitch Noggle (Dublin/Coffman) and freshman wing Tim Brady (Dublin/Jerome) had 4 points apiece during a 10-0 run that broke the game open as Ohio Wesleyan defeated Earlham in North Coast Athletic Conference play on Saturday in Richmond, Ind.

Earlham's Tristian Gregory opened the second half with a jumper that brought the Quakers within 32-20, but the Bishops responded with the 13-2 run.

Junior post Brent Pleiman (Russia) kicked off the run with a lay-in, and freshman post Pat Pellerite (Olmsted Falls) followed with a 3-point play before Holliday contributed a 3-point play of his own, then added a pair of free throws and a 3-pointer as Ohio Wesleyan opened up a 45-32 lead just over 5 minutes into the period.

The Quakers closed to within 48-40 when Shane Heidt hit the first of 2 free throws, missed the second, but grabbed the offensive rebound and scored on the putback with 12:19 left in regulation time.

Noggle hit a lay-in and added a pair of free throws to open the Bishops' pivotal 10-0 run, then Brady and Pleiman sank lay-ins before a Brady jumper stretched the Ohio Wesleyan lead to 58-40 with 9:01 remaining, and the lead would remain in double digits for the remainder of the game.

Ohio Wesleyan threatened to run off with the game early, breaking a 7-7 tie with 7 straight points on a Pellerite jumper, a pair of free throws by senior wing Kyle Miller (Delaware/Hayes) and a Holliday 3-pointer.

Earlham rallied to take a 24-20 lead, with the Quaker spurt capped by a lay-in and a 3-pointer by A.J. Sutherlin, only to see the Bishops score the next 8 points on a Pellerite lay-in, a 3-pointer by sophomore guard Mike Schwartz (Upper Arlington) and a 3-point play by Brady, and that 4-point margin would hold until halftime, with the Bishops leaving the floor at the break with a 32-28 lead.

Holliday led the Bishops with 21 points, while Pellerite followed with 15 points and a season-high 15 rebounds. Brady also finished with 15 points and Miller scored 13 points.
