Jan. 24, 2009

[ Kyle Miller ]Senior wing Kyle Miller (Delaware/Hayes) buried a 3-pointer that put Ohio Wesleyan ahead to stay and kicked off a crucial 8-0 run down the stretch that helped the Bishops seal a North Coast Athletic Conference win over Allegheny on Saturday in Meadville, Pa.

In the waning moments of a nip-and-tuck second half in which each team held a 4-point lead, Allegheny's Charlie Jaicks hit a 3-pointer that gave the hosts a 55-50 lead -- the Gators' biggest of the game -- with 5:40 left in regulation time.

The Bishops rallied with a pair of 3-pointers by senior wing Kyle Holliday (Van Wert), sandwiching those buckets around a jumper by Scott Rea as Ohio Wesleyan closed to within 57-56 with 2:23 to go.

Allegheny's Doug Price hit 1 of 2 charity tosses to give the Gators a 58-56 lead with 1:35 left.

Miller's 3-pointer with :47 left gave the Bishops a 59-58 lead, and after an Allegheny miss, freshman post Pat Pellerite (Olmsted Falls) hit a free throw for a 60-58 Ohio Wesleyan lead with :20 to play.

Miller stole the ball on the Gators' ensuing possession, and hit a pair of free throws to stretch the Bishop lead to 62-58 with :10 left, and Pellerite followed suit with a steal and a pair of free throws with :04 to play, allowing the Bishops to withstand Rea's putback lay-in at the buzzer.

Ohio Wesleyan threatened to run away with the game, taking off on a 13-2 run to open the contest. Holliday contributed a pair of baskets and 3 free throws, and Miller added a pair of hoops during that spurt.

The Bishops still led, 24-13, on Miller's lay-in with 4:39 left in the half only to see Allegheny go on a 12-2 run to end the period, with Craig Devinney starting the run with a 3-pointer and George Raftis ending it with a pair of lay-ins to finish off the half and bring the Gators within 26-25 at the break.

Holliday led the Bishops with 26 points, while Miller added 18 points and a team bests of 8 rebounds and 4 assists. Pellerite contributed 11 points.

Raftis led Allegheny with 20 points, Jaicks scored 12 points and Devinney and Rea had 10 points apiece.
