Ohio Wesleyan 75, Oberlin 53

[ Pat Pellerite ]Freshman post Pat Pellerite (Olmsted Falls) scored 10 points as Ohio Wesleyan opened the second half with a 24-8 run and went on to defeat Oberlin in North Coast Athletic Conference action on Thursday at Branch Rickey Arena.

Oberlin's Jordan Beard hit a 3-pointer and a lay-in to bring the Yeomen within 37-33 early in the second half, but Ohio Wesleyan responded by scoring the next 6 points, with junior post Brent Pleiman (Russia) hitting a free throw before Pellerite converted a 3-point play and hit a lay-in to give the Bishops a 43-33 lead with 14:19 left in regulation time.

Omari Hall sank a free throw to end that Ohio Wesleyan run, but the Bishops started another on their next possession, with Pellerite knocking down a 3-pointer to start a 9-0 spurt that also included a pair of baskets by freshman wing Tim Brady (Dublin/Jerome) and a tip-in by sophomore wing Dillon McBride (Medina).

Ryan Magiera scored on a lay-in with 11:03 remaining, Oberlin's first basket in more than 6 minutes, but senior wing Mitch Noggle (Dublin/Coffman) hit a 3-pointer to give the Bishops a 55-36 lead with 10:23 to play.

Oberlin rallied with 3-pointers by Beard and Omari Hall to pull within 57-42, but that was as close as the Yeomen would come.

Ohio Wesleyan threatened to run away with the game early, using a 9-2 run that included 7 points by senior wing Kyle Holliday (Van Wert) and a lay-in by Pleiman to take a 13-4 lead just over 5 minutes into the contest.

The Yeomen closed the gap with a 7-0 run midway through the half, getting a 3-pointer by Hall and buckets from Josh Merritt and Beard to close to within 21-19 with 8:01 left in the period.

Another timely 3-pointer by Beard brought the Yeomen within 27-24, and Hall's buzzer-beating lay-in made it a 31-28 game, keeping Oberlin within 3 points at the break.

Holliday led the Bishops with 18 points. Pellerite finished with 14 points, going 5-for-6 from the field, and senior wing Kyle Miller (Delaware/Hayes) scored 10 points and posted team bests of 8 rebounds and 4 assists.

Beard led Oberlin with 15 points, while Ryan Magiera added 13 points.
