Ohio Wesleyan 83, Wooster 65

[ Brent Pleiman ]Junior post Brent Pleiman (Russia) provided some early scoring punch and senior wing Kyle Holliday (Van Wert) added 18 second-half points while etching his name into the Ohio Wesleyan record books as the Battling Bishops defeated Wooster in North Coast Athletic Conference competition on Saturday at Branch Rickey Arena.

Pleiman scored a pair of inside buckets in the first minute of the game, and after baskets by junior guard Rob Gardiner (Dublin/Coffman) and freshman post Pat Pellerite (Olmsted Falls), it was Pleiman again, adding a pair of free throws and a lay-in to give Ohio Wesleyan a 12-7 lead less than 4 minutes into the contest.

Wooster closed to within 17-16 as Justin Hallowell hit a 3-pointer and a pair of free throws and Marty Bidwell added a fast-break lay-in, but Ohio Wesleyan countered by reeling off the next 10 points, with Gardiner and senior wing Kyle Miller (Delaware/Hayes) knocking down 3-pointers and sophomore guard Mike Schwartz (Upper Arlington) and Holliday adding baskets from the lane for a 27-16 Bishop lead with 7:44 remaining.

Bidwell scored to end that Bishop run, but Ohio Wesleyan came back with a pair of baskets from Miller and a pair of Holliday free throws to stretch the lead to 33-18 with 3:10 left in the half.

Wooster rallied to within 33-22 at halftime, and came out firing with an Ian Franks 3-pointer just 8 seconds into the second half. When Greg Ross followed with a lay-in, the Fighting Scots were within 33-27 with 19:19 left in regulation time.

Ohio Wesleyan responded by scoring the next 7 points, with Pellerite scoring from inside and Holliday hitting a 3-pointer and a jumper from the lane to extend the margin to 40-27.

Holliday's 3-point play and 3-pointers by Miller and Gardiner pushed the Ohio Wesleyan lead to 55-35 with 12:34 remaining, and the margin would remain in double digits through the remainder of the contest.

Holliday finished with a game-high 27 points, going 9-for-11 from the field. His 27 points raised his career total to 1009, making him the 25th Ohio Wesleyan men's basketball player to surpass the 1000-point mark.

Miller finished with 18 points and led the Bishops with 6 rebounds and 6 assists, and Pleiman added 11 points.

Nathan Balch led Wooster with 14 points, while Franks finished with 13, Bidwell added 12, and Hallowell scored 11 points.
