Capital 82, Ohio Wesleyan 70

[ Rob Gardiner ]Junior guard Rob Gardiner (Dublin/Coffman), senior wing Kyle Holliday (Van Wert) and freshman post Pat Pellerite (Olmsted Falls) scored as Ohio Wesleyan whittled a 10-point second-half deficit to 4 points, but 12th-ranked Capital answered with a 6-0 run to thwart the rally and went on to defeat the Bishops in non-conference action on Wednesday in Columbus.

The Bishops opened the scoring with a jumper by junior post Brent Pleiman (Russia), but Capital countered with a 10-2 spree that included a pair of 3-pointers by Ryan Wood, a tip-in by D.J, Frazier and a lay-in from Casey Brown to take a 10-4 lead.

Ohio Wesleyan cut the deficit to 10-9 with a Holliday lay-in and a 3-pointer from senior wing Kyle Miller (Delaware/Hayes), and the Bishops eventually tied the game at 24-24 at the midway point of the half on a lay-in by sophomore wing Dillon McBride (Medina) and a lay-in by sophomore guard Mike Schwartz (Upper Arlington).

Capital took the lead for good with a Quintin Mitchell lay-in and followed with a 3-pointer by Ross Niekamp, and the Crusaders moved out to an 8-point lead on Nate Stahl's jumper with 1:33 left in the half.

Miller hit a pair of free throws to bring the Bishops within 41-35 at the intermission, and after trailing, 54-44, Ohio Wesleyan closed to within 4 points by assembling a jumper by Gardiner, a pair of free throws from Holliday and a Pellerite lay-in to make it a 54-50 game with 10:26 left in the second half.

Capital answered with Wood's jumper from the lane, and added lay-ins from Mitchell and Brown just :17 apart to restore the 10-point lead at 60-50 with 8:34 to go.

Holliday buried a 3-pointer to bring the Bishops within 7 points, but that was as close as the Bishops would come as Capital went 7-for-10 from the line to extend a 71-63 lead to a 78-63 margin in the closing minutes.

Miller led the Bishops with 17 points, while Holliday added 12 points and Gardiner scored 10 points. Pellerite led all players with a season-high 14 rebounds.

Stahl and Wood shared the Capital lead with 17 points apiece, with Niekamp and Adam Johns adding 12 points each and Mitchell adding 10 points.
