May 2, 2009

[ Rob Young ]Junior attacker Rob Young (Langhorne, Pa./Council Rock South) scored a man-down goal during a 4-0 second-quarter run that put Ohio Wesleyan ahead to stay, then added 3 goals during the fourth quarter to help the Bishops pull away for a North Coast Athletic Conference win over Wittenberg on Saturday in Springfield.

Wittenberg drew first blood on Ted Winders's man-up goal midway through the first quarter, but the Bishops evened the score just over a minute later when senior midfielder Connor McGowan (Worthington/Thomas Worthington) scored off a feed from senior attacker Nick Gallagher (Columbus/Dublin Scioto).

Winders found Matt Lord for a score that gave the Tigers a 2-1 lead early in the second period.

Sophomore defenseman Tony D'Abarno (Venetta, Pa./Peters Township) tied the game with an unassisted goal midway through the quarter, then Gallagher scored less than a minute later to put Ohio Wesleyan ahead to stay.

Young followed with a man-down score with 4:43 left in the half, and junior attacker Dave Castignola (Dublin/Scioto) added man-up goal with 1:43 to play, giving the Bishops a 5-2 lead at halftime.

Wittenberg pulled within 5-3 when Mitch Cohagan scored a man-up goal with 12:30 remaining in the third quarter, but Young seized the momentum back for Ohio Wesleyan by scoring just 16 seconds later to restore the 3-goal margin.

Chris Gipson followed with a goal to bring Wittenberg within 6-4, but Ohio Wesleyan once again responded quickly, as senior midfielder Kevin McMahon (Wilton, Conn.) tallied a goal just 27 seconds later, again giving the Bishops a 3-goal cushion.

Castignola followed with another man-up score and McGowan rang up a goal to extend the Bishop lead to 9-4, and after Cohagan's man-up goal wrapped up the third quarter scoring, Ohio Wesleyan put the game out of reach by scoring the first 3 goals of the fourth quarter, getting a score from junior midfielder Craig Aronoff (Potomac, Md./The Bullis School) and 2 more from Young for a 12-5 lead.

Young led the Bishops with 5 goals, while McGowan and Castignola added 2 goals apiece.

Sophomore Jud Hall (Columbus/Upper Arlington) went the distance in the Ohio Wesleyan crease, making 13 saves.

Matt Lord, Cohagan, and Winders scored 2 goals apiece for Wittenberg.

Mark DeOliveira had 17 saves in the Tiger cage.
