Ohio Wesleyan 3, Grove City 0
Capital 3, McMurry 0

Sept. 6, 2008

[ Jordan Halloran ]Freshman forward Matt Bonfini (Dublin/Coffman), junior midfielder Jordan Halloran (Springfield/Catholic Central) and sophomore midfielder Ryan Harmanis (Hilliard/Davidson) scored goals to give eighth-ranked Ohio Wesleyan a win over Grove City in the second round of the annual adidas® Invitational on Saturday at Roy Rike Field.

The Bishops attacked the Wolverine goal early, with Halloran blistering a shot across the goal mouth in the fifth minute, earning a corner for Ohio Wesleyan, and on that ensuing corner, sophomore back Brian Greene (Beavercreek) hitting a header that Grove City keeper Tim Lansing leaped high to tip over the crossbar.

Ohio Wesleyan converted on its next dangerous chance, when sophomore forward Tyler Wall (Columbus/Upper Arlington) passed the ball into the box and Bonfini finished off the chance with 28:43 left in the first half.

Grove City's best chance of the period came in the 21st minute, when the Wolverines lined up for a restart just outside the Ohio Wesleyan penalty area, but Paul Cardinal's drive glanced off the Bishop wall and over the end line.

Lansing kept the game at 1-0 in the 23rd minute, making a diving save to rob Halloran, who had made a run after fielding a through ball, and that 1-0 margin was how the first half would end.

Halloran would not be denied the next time, however, as he took a through ball from Bonfini and beat Lansing with a shot less than 2 minutes into the second half.

The Bishops finished off the scoring in the 71st minute when sophomore back Eric Laipple (Westerville/South) sent a corner kick into the box and Harmanis finished off the chance.

Ohio Wesleyan outshot Grove City, 31-4. Freshman Steve Gobel (Wilbraham, Mass./Loomis Chaffee (Conn.)) had 1 save in completing the shutout for the Bishops. Lansing finished with 9 saves for Grove City.

Gobel, Halloran, junior back Kevin McGowan (Cincinnati/Oak Hills) and Wall represented the Bishops on the all-tournament team.

In Saturday's opener, Capital took the lead with a pair of goals less than a minute apart and the Crusaders went on to defeat McMurry.

Joey Snyder put Capital on the scoreboard with an unassisted goal with 11:02 left in the first half, and Tyler Mowbray scored from a pack in front of the McMurry goal with 10:12 to play in the period.

Devon Ludwig finished off the Crusader scoring with an unassisted goal midway through the second half.

Capital outshot McMurry, 25-5. Justin Bultman was not tested during the first half for Capital, while John Snyder had 2 saves during the second half. Leeland Karpf and Curtis Crocker combined for 9 saves for McMurry.
