Ohio Wesleyan 8, Earlham 1

Sept. 27, 2008

[ Matt Bonfini ]Sophomore forward Tyler Wall (Columbus/Upper Arlington) and freshman forward Matt Bonfini (Dublin/Coffman) scored 2 goals apiece as Ohio Wesleyan erupted for a season-high 8 goals to defeat Earlham in the North Coast Athletic Conference opener for both teams on Saturday at Roy Rike Field.

Bonfini wasted no time in starting the evening's fireworks, making a run into the Earlham end and finding the back of the Quaker net just 44 seconds into the game.

Wall added a goal in the sixth minute, taking a diagonal pass from freshman forward Taylor Kiefer (North Canton/Hoover), heading toward the Earlham goal, and firing a shot past Earlham keeper Jonah Kreniske.

The first half would end with the Bishops holding that 2-0 lead, but the scoring was far from over.

Bonfini struck again early in the second half, sliding in front of the Earlham goal to finish off a centering pass from sophomore back Eric Laipple (Westerville/South) in the 52nd minute.

Kiefer followed with a 30-yard shot into the top right corner of the net for his first collegiate goal, that coming in the 59th minute.

Just over a minute later, Wall was taken down inside the Quaker penalty area and converted the ensuing penalty kick to increase the Bishop lead to 5-0.

Earlham countered with a score as Bannet Asingura crossed the ball to Omar Driedi, who finished off the chance in the 72nd minute.

Sophomore forward Tyler Bryant (Chillicothe/Unioto) got that goal back in the 75th minute, and the Bishops finished off the scoring with goals by sophomore midfielder Kody Law (Reynoldsburg) and junior forward Eric Francis (Alliance/Marlington) in the closing minutes.

Ohio Wesleyan outshot Earlham, 27-10. Junior Richard Ott (Norwalk) had 4 saves for the Bishops, while Kreniske finished with 6 saves for the Quakers.
