Ohio Wesleyan 1, Oberlin 0

Oct. 15, 2008

[ Brian Greene ]Sophomore back Brian Greene (Beavercreek) scored the game-winning goal in the first overtime period to lift Ohio Wesleyan to a North Coast Athletic Conference win over Oberlin on Wednesday at Roy Rike Field.

Senior back T.J. Trigg (Westerville/North) served the ball into the penalty area from about 35 yards out, and Greene finished the chance from in front of the Oberlin goal, ending a defensive battle between the teams.

Greene had the first good scoring chance of the game, taking a crossing pass from freshman forward Taylor Kiefer (North Canton/Hoover) but sending his shot wide in the fourth minute.

Oberlin's Oliver Farrell had the best look of the half for the Yeomen, blistering a shot from the right side, but Ohio Wesleyan keeper Richard Ott (Norwalk) made the save.

Late in the first half, Trigg lined up for a restart from 25 yards out but sent his shot just over the crossbar, and in the 43rd minute, sophomore forward Tyler Wall (Columbus/Upper Arlington) took a centering pass from junior midfielder Blake Pifer (Fleming/Ada) and worked open for a glimpse at the Oberlin goal, but his shot was snared by Yeomen keeper Zach Lipshultz.

Lipshultz preserved the shutout early in the second half, coming out to block a shot by Kiefer after a lead pass from junior midfielder Phil Serfaty (Dublin/Jerome) had turned Kiefer loose on a breakaway, and later caught a break when a shot by sophomore midfielder Chad Baker (Dublin/Jerome) glanced off the crossbar and was cleared.

Both teams had chances to score in overtime, Oberlin's coming in the first minute of the extra session when Skyler Dum won the ball in the Bishop end, maneuvered around an Ohio Wesleyan defender and centered it to Evan Atwell, whose header was wide.

The Bishops countered in the 95th minute when Baker centered the ball to a speeding Wall, whose redirect attempt bounced wide of the left post.

Ohio Wesleyan outshot Oberlin, 22-13. Ott finished with 5 saves for the Bishops, while Lipshultz had 6 saves for the Yeomen.
