Sophomore back Brian Greene (Beavercreek), sophomore midfielder Ryan Harmanis (Hilliard/Davidson) and junior midfielder Will Murawski (Alpharetta, Ga./Westerville North) scored second-half goals as Ohio Wesleyan remained unbeaten in the North Coast Athletic Conference with a hard-fought NCAC win over Wabash on Saturday at Roy Rike Field.
Ohio Wesleyan had the first good scoring opportunities of the contest, first when freshman forward Matt Bonfini (Dublin/Coffman) made a run into the box and got past Little Giant keeper Pat West, but the Wabash defense cleared the ball before Bonfini could get off a shot. West later grabbed a shot off the foot of sophomore forward Tyler Bryant (Chillicothe/Unioto) in the 27th minute to keep the game scoreless.
Wabash took advantage of its first opportunity, with Matt Kaster winning the ball in the Ohio Wesleyan end and centering it to Andre Hall, whose shot from close range found the back of the Bishop net with 11:43 left in the first half.
The Bishops did not put together another scoring threat during the first half, but they wasted little time in doing so to open the second half. Ohio Wesleyan earned a corner kick just over a minute into the period, and sophomore back Eric Laipple (Westerville/South) launched the ball into the box, where Greene headed it home to tie the game at 1-1 just 1:23 into the period.
Laipple had a shot at breaking the tie, lining up for a restart just outside the Wabash penalty area, but his laser was snared by West in the 56th minute.
Ohio Wesleyan took the lead when junior back Matt Giannetti (Montclair, N.J.) sent a long pass ahead to Harmanis, who was off on a breakaway against West. West came out to the top of the penalty area to break up the play, but Harmanis eluded him and got off a shot into the unprotected goal for a 2-1 Bishop lead with 22:00 left in regulation time.
Laipple set up the Bishops' third goal as well, sending a restart into the box. Sophomore forward Tyler Wall (Columbus/Upper Arlington) played the ball ahead to Murawski, who finished off the chance inside the right post with 19:04 to play.
Ohio Wesleyan outshot Wabash, 25-4. Junior Richard Ott (Norwalk) finished with 1 save for the Bishops, while West had 10 saves for the Little Giants.
