at NCAC championship

[ David Gatz ]Junior David Gatz (Delaware/Hayes) successfully defended his North Coast Athletic Conference championship in the 100 breaststroke to lead the Bishops on the second day of the NCAC championship meet on Friday in Canton.

After the second day of competition, Denison was leading the meet with 1196 points to 996 1/2 for Kenyon. Wittenberg was in third place with 583 1/2 points, followed by Wabash (498), Wooster (430), Allegheny (426), Oberlin (315), Ohio Wesleyan (223), and Hiram (211).

Gatz won the 100 breaststroke in a time of :56.31, shaving 2/100 of a second off the school record he set last year. His time surpassed the automatic qualifying standard for the NCAA Division III championship meet to be held March 18-21 in Minneapolis.

Other standouts for the Bishops included junior Kevin Fahey (Delaware/Hayes), who finished 13th in the 400 IM and the 100 breaststroke; senior Brian Fahey (Delaware/Hayes), who placed 22nd in the 100 breaststroke; freshman Nathan Eckersley (Cleveland/Mayfield), who was 23rd in the 400 IM; and junior Nathaniel Cook (Delaware/Hayes), who placed 24th in the 100 breaststroke.

The Bishop 200 medley relay team of freshman Jesse Sheldon (Mansfield/Ontario), Gatz, Cook, and Kevin Fahey finished eighth, while the 800 freestyle relay team of Sheldon, junior Andrew Sisson (Greensburg, Pa./Greater Latrobe), freshman Evan Huddleson (Westerville/Central), and junior Chris Potterton (Needham, Mass.) finished ninth.

The NCAC championship concludes on Saturday, with preliminaries beginning at 10 a.m. and finals commencing at 6:30 p.m.
