1st of 14 at Marv Frye Invitational

[ David Stefanik ]Senior David Stefanik (Wooster) won an event and junior Steve Brown (Redford Township, Mich./Redford) helped a relay team to a win and surpassed a national qualifying standard in leading Ohio Wesleyan to the team title at the Marv Frye Invitational on Saturday at the George Gauthier Track.

Ohio Wesleyan won the meet with 163 points to 103 1/2 for runner-up Baldwin-Wallace. Oberlin was third with 74 points, followed by Rose-Hulman (59), Allegheny (58), Wilmington (54), Otterbein (48), Thiel (47), and Capital (41). Bluffton rounded out the top 10 finishers with 34 points, followed by Albion (26 1/2), Muskingum (17), Kenyon (15), and Denison (1).

Stefanik won the 5000-meter run in a time of 15:25.07.

Brown finished second in the 110-meter hurdles in :14.83, surpassing the provisional qualifying standard for the NCAA Division III championship meet to be held May 21-23 at Marietta. He also finished sixth in the 200-meter dash and seventh in the long jump. Brown led off the Bishop 400-meter relay team, combining with junior Will Alford (Maple Heights), senior Nathan Osborn (Edgerton), and sophomore Sean Patrick (Delaware/Hayes) to win the event in :42.54.

Other standouts for the Bishops included junior David Burke (Hudson), who finished second in the long jump, third in the triple jump, and fourth in the high jump; freshman Sharif Kronemer (Silver Spring, Md./Springbrook), who was second in the 1500-meter run and third in the 800-meter run; Osborn, who was second in the 400-meter dash and third in the 200-meter dash; senior Preston Osborn (Edgerton), who placed third in the 400-meter hurdles; freshman Evan Hitchcock (Fishers, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern), who finished third in the 5000-meter run; sophomore Jordon Exeter (Toronto, Ontario/Mercersburg (Pa.) Academy), who was fourth in the long jump; senior Alex Havran (Woodinville, Wash./Overlake), who placed fourth in the javelin; junior Christian Schlabach (Wooster/Triway), who was fourth in the 1500-meter run; senior Andrew Bloom (Powell/Worthington Kilbourne), who finished fourth in the 110-meter hurdles; sophomore Jeff Driscoll (Shreve/Triway), who was fourth in the 800-meter run; junior Bryce Mathias (Centerburg), who placed fourth in the 400-meter hurdles; junior Kyle Faris (Olmsted Falls), who was fifth in the hammer and seventh in the discus; senior Jon Smith (Clyde/Bellevue), who finished fifth in the pole vault; senior Bobby Polley (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny), who finished fifth in the javelin; freshman Kale Booher (Covington/Newton), who was fifth in the 1500-meter run; sophomore Parone Mulrain (Chicago, Ill./Latin School), who finished sixth in the triple jump and eighth in the long jump; senior Ryan Ellis (Columbus/Dublin Scioto), who placed sixth in the 400-meter dash; freshman David Franklin (Reynoldsburg), who was seventh in the 110-meter hurdles; sophomore Kody Law (Reynoldsburg), who finished seventh in the 400-meter dash; Patrick, who was eighth in the 100- and 200-meter dashes; junior Brandon Cannon (Dublin/Scioto), who was eighth in the 110-meter hurdles; and junior Matthew MacKenzie (Franklin, Mass.), who was eighth in the 800-meter run.

The Bishop 1600-meter relay team of Mathias, Preston Osborn, Patrick, and Nathan Osborn finished second in its event.
