1st of 10 at Kenyon Invitational

[ Kyle Faris ]Junior Kyle Faris (Olmsted Falls) won 2 events and junior Steve Brown (Redford Township, Mich./Redford) surpassed a national qualifying standard in leading Ohio Wesleyan to the team championship at the Kenyon Invitational on Saturday in Gambier.

Ohio Wesleyan won the meet with 154 points to 128 for Ohio Northern. Heidelberg was third with 101 points, followed by Otterbein (67), Wooster (64), Denison (59), Muskingum (56), Capital (53), Kenyon (41), and Ashland (13).

Faris won the hammer with a throw of 154-3, breaking his own school record of 145-9 set last week. Faris also won the discus with a throw of 134-1 and finished third in the shot put.

Brown won the 110-meter hurdles in :14.67, surpassing the provisional qualifying standard for the NCAA Division III championship meet to be held May 21-23 at Marietta.

Also winning events for Ohio Wesleyan were sophomore Jeff Driscoll (Shreve/Triway), who won the 800-meter run in 1:57.18; senior Clay Davis (Dublin/Coffman), who won the 5000-meter run in 15:47.05; and junior Bryce Mathias (Centerburg), who won the 400-meter hurdles in :56.53.

Other standouts for the Bishops included senior Preston Osborn (Edgerton), who finished third in the 400-meter dash and fifth in the 200-meter dash; sophomore Parone Mulrain (Chicago, Ill./Latin School), who was third in the triple jump and sixth in the long jump; senior Gary Brenneman (Fredericktown), who placed third in the 1500-meter run; freshman Chris Ziska (Berea), who was third in the discus; senior Andrew Bloom (Powell/Worthington Kilbourne), who finished third in the javelin; senior Ryan Ellis (Columbus/Dublin Scioto), who was fourth in the 400-meter dash; freshman David Franklin (Reynoldsburg), who finished fourth in the 110-meter hurdles; junior David Burke (Hudson), who finished fourth in the long jump; sophomore Sean Patrick (Delaware/Hayes), who placed fifth in the 100-meter dash and seventh in the 400-meter dash; junior Christian Schlabach (Wooster/Triway), who was fifth in the 800-meter run; sophomore Jordon Exeter (Toronto, Ontario/Mercersburg (Pa.) Academy), who was sixth in the 100-meter dash, seventh in the 200-meter dash, and eighth in the high jump; junior Matthew MacKenzie (Franklin, Mass.), who placed sixth in the 800-meter run; senior Bobby Polley (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny), who finished sixth in the javelin; senior John Wessel (Parma/Valley Forge), who was seventh in the shot put; freshman Jon Rux (North Oaks, Minn./Mounds View), who finished seventh in the hammer; freshman A.J. Sayed ( Punta Gorda, Fla./Charlotte), who finished eighth in the triple jump; and senior Brandon Hunter (Twinsburg), who was eighth in the javelin.

The Bishop 1600-meter relay team finished second in its event.
