Senior Andrew Bloom (Powell/Worthington Kilbourne) was leading the pack, while sophomore Nate Goodall (Ostrander/Bishop Watterson) was fifth and senior Alex Havran (Woodinville, Wash./Overlake) was seventh after the first day of the North Coast Athletic Conference decathlon competition on Saturday in Oberlin.

Bloom, the 2-time defending NCAC champion in the decathlon, was leading the standings with 3280 points. Kyle Taljan of Oberlin was in second place with 3230 points and Wittenberg's Tim Uher was third with 3127 points. Goodall was in fifth place with 2752 points, while Havran was seventh with 2591 points.

Bloom had the day's best efforts in the high jump (6-0) and the 400-meter dash (:51.95). His 100-meter time of :11.32 and his long jump of 20-4 1/2 were second-best on the day, and he threw 32-4 1/4 in the shot put.

Goodall finished the 100-meter dash in :12.13, went 20-4 1/4 in the long jump, had a 26-6 1/2 in the shot put, cleared 5-5 3/4 in the high jump and turned in a :54.87 in the 400-meter dash.

Havran clocked a :12.09 in the 100-meter dash, had an 18-5 1/4 in the long jump, threw 30-11 1/4 in the shot put, cleared 5- 1/4 in the high jump and had the day's best time in the 400-meter dash with a :55.21.

The decathlon competition concludes on Sunday with the 110-meter hurdles, the discus, the pole vault, the javelin and the 1500-meter run.
