at NCAC decathlon

[ Andrew Bloom ]Senior Andrew Bloom (Powell/Worthington Kilbourne) set a school record and qualified for the NCAA Division III championship meet in winning his third straight North Coast Athletic Conference decathlon title during the NCAC multi-event championships on Saturday and Sunday in Oberlin.

Bloom compiled 6270 points, defeating Oberlin's Kyle Taljan for the conference crown by more than 200 points. Bloom's 6270 points broke his own school record of 5804 set last year, and surpassed the provisional qualifying standard for the NCAA Division III championship meet to be held May 21-23 at Marietta.

Senior Alex Havran (Woodinville, Wash./Overlake) finished fifth in the decathlon, while sophomore Nate Goodall (Ostrander/Bishop Watterson) placed sixth.

Bloom had the meet's best efforts in the high jump (6-0), the 400-meter dash (:51.95), and the 110-meter hurdles (:15.40). His 100-meter time of :11.32, his long jump of 20-4 1/2, his discus throw of 101-6, and his javelin throw of 158-6 were second-best in the meet, and he threw 32-4 1/4 in the shot put, cleared 11-11 1/4 in the pole vault, and clocked a 4:49.42 in the 1500-meter run.

Havran recorded the meet's best efforts in the 400-meter dash (:55.21), the javelin (165-10), and the 1500-meter run (4:37.17). He also clocked a :12.09 in the 100-meter dash, had an 18-5 1/4 in the long jump, threw 30-11 1/4 in the shot put, cleared 5- 1/4 in the high jump, ran :19.70 in the 110-meter hurdles, threw 81-1 in the discus, and cleared 9-11 3/4 in the pole vault.

Goodall finished the 100-meter dash in :12.13, went 20-4 1/4 in the long jump, had a 26-6 1/2 in the shot put, cleared 5-5 3/4 in the high jump, turned in a :54.87 in the 400-meter dash, clocked a :19.54 in the 110-meter hurdles, threw the discus 49-10, cleared 9-11 3/4 in the pole vault, threw the javelin 118-5, and finished the 1500-meter run in 4:54.93.
