March 21, 2009

[ Devon Walker ]Junior second baseman Devon Walker (Baltimore/Watkins Memorial) and sophomore catcher Sarah Truchan (Westfield Center/Brunswick) slammed home runs and junior lefthander Rachel Seibel (Johnstown/Johnstown-Monroe) fired a 4-hit shutout as Ohio Wesleyan defeated Alma in the opener of a non-conference doubleheader on Saturday in Alma, Mich.

In the nightcap, sophomore shortstop Kaylie Titus (East Hampton, N.Y.) smashed a 2-run homer that staked the Bishops to a 2-0 first-inning lead, but the Fighting Scots rallied to salvage a split of the twinbill.

The opener featured a pitching duel between Seibel and Alma's Tara Leddy. Seibel allowed a pair of hits in the bottom of the second, but got out of the inning when Alma's Kasey Miller lined to Titus for an unassisted double play.

Leddy, meanwhile, retired the first 11 Bishop hitters before Titus reached on a 2-out error in the fourth. Leddy took the no-hitter into the fifth, then walked Truchan with 2 out before Walker launched her first collegiate home run, ending the no-hitter and the shutout.

The Bishops put the game out of reach with 5 runs in the sixth, with Titus lining an RBI double and sophomore first baseman Tara VanVranken (North Canton/Massillon Jackson) following with a run-scoring single before Truchan capped the frame with a 3-run shot that gave Ohio Wesleyan a 7-0 lead.

Seibel finished with a 4-hit shutout, striking out 6 and walking 2.

In the nightcap, Ohio Wesleyan jumped to an early lead when junior first baseman Emily Bradley (Columbus/Upper Arlington) was hit by a pitch to open the game, and one out later, Titus blasted a drive to leftfield to make it 2-0. The Bishops got 2 more runners on after Titus's shot, but Fighting Scot starter Brittany Grys worked out of the jam.

Alma answered in the bottom of the inning, scoring 3 times on RBI singles by Kelsey Rightenburg and Miller and a bases-loaded walk to Trista-Lynne Geier.

Walker plated a run with an infield grounder to tie the game at 3-3 in the third, but Alma once again had a response, taking the lead for good on Emily Ross's 2-run homer in the bottom of the inning.

VanVranken singled home a run in the sixth to bring the Bishops within 6-4, bringing the go-ahead run to the plate, but Alma's Erin Pintek got out of the inning without any further damage.

Freshman righthander Lauren McIntire (Marysville/Buckeye Valley) was the starting and losing pitcher for Ohio Wesleyan.
